Description
Pillow boxes like these were commonly used in China during the Qing dynasty to deter would-be thieves. The owner would place valuables inside the box and rest his head on the concave lid. Many of these boxes were made of plain wood with no decoration, but more wealthy merchants would use boxes covered in leather and decorated with fine designs. Our boxes are covered with leatheroid, hand-painted in gold with classic designs such as the dragon and phoenix, and with a brass clasp and hinges. The insides are lined with old Chinese calendar paper or old newspaper. Please note that sizes and designs will vary from those shown.
