Bring 2018’s Colour of the Year into Your Home

Every year, we wait for Pantone’s Colour of the Year with bated breath. In December, we finally found out the colour for 2018, and we absolutely love their choice: Ultra Violet (18-3838).

Whether you’re a home interior aficionado or novice, we’re sure you’ll be looking at ways to incorporate purple shades it into your home. Read on as we look at the Colour of the Year in more detail, and how it can fit perfectly into your design scheme.

Why ultra violet?

So, why have Pantone, the globally-renowned colour institute, opted for this year’s colour. Their expert pick is a reflection of what’s happening across the globe.

According to Leatrice Eiseman, Pantone’s Executive Director, the colour “takes our awareness and potential to a higher level… from exploring new technologies and the greater galaxies, to artistic expression and spiritual reflection.”

This deep, blue-based purple provides direction for everyone in the world of design, manufacture and printing. So, inspired by Pantone’s beautiful choice, we’ve decided to pick out some of our own range of fabulous purple products. From armchairs to draught-excluders, these beautiful sheepskin items are the perfect way to incorporate the on-trend colour into your design in 2018, and for years to come…

Start at the bottom

Purple can be incorporated at any level of your design, and that includes the floor. Baa Stool’s gorgeous sheepskin rug in aubergine can add some much-needed texture to your design, as well as being sumptuously soft on your feet. It’s also a versatile option, as you can use it as a throw on your sofa for those cosy winter nights.

The small things in life

For something smaller, why not opt for purple cushions? It’s a great way to refresh your existing scheme and keeping it on-trend without overpowering what’s already there. Baa Stool’s heart-shaped and square sheepskin cushions are made in a deep purple shade, ideal for adding contrast to your design scheme.

Adding a feature piece

Undoubtedly the most eye-catching option for adding the 2018 colour of the year into your home is our collection of stylish Baa Stools. Baa Stool’s staple product, they’re something we’re absolutely in love with – and come in a range of stylish colours including the beautiful aubergine purple.

Even better, their footstools boast subtle wood and metal features, which have also become a design must in recent years. Anwen and Baby Bethan feature attractive hardwood legs, while Ffion and Rona opt for metal. Choose between steel style and antique copper legs to give your design scheme the ultimate contemporary twist.

Luxury sheepskin furniture

Baa Stool creates a wide range of luxury products using gorgeous British sheepskin. Their quirky furniture offers homeowners and venue managers the perfect way to create a design scheme that’s both unique, eye-catching and memorable.

Baa Stool is Born

When tradition meets creativity, the Baa Stool is born.

While it was born on a lush, green hillside in North Wales, this is not your usual spring lamb.

Baring an uncanny resemblance to the real thing, the Baa Stool is a luxury, sheepskin, hardwood footstool, with a removable cover, created by hand by a traditionally trained upholstress.

It was during a tea break from a particularly challenging chair that Baa Stool creator Michelle Bartleet-Greavey  glimpsed the sheep in the fields surrounding her Denbighshire workshop and mused that 'they looked like little footstools’. The idea took hold and Michelle set to work designing a proto-type Baa Stool.

The Baa Stool is a unique and contemporary piece of quality furniture, designed to work with both modern and period interiors.

Michelle said: “We’ve had a fantastic response to the Baa Stool, they literally attract flocks of admirers and never fail to make people smile. The sheepskin makes them incredibly soft, so it's impossible not to dip your fingers, or toes, in.

“Underneath the fluff, these are 100 per cent handmade. I source all the materials within 20 miles of my home in North Wales and use local craftspeople to make the body of the stool.”

The Baa Stool covers are premium grade British sheepskin stitched into a sleeve that fits snugly but is removable for easy cleaning. The stools are available in natural shades of ivory, dark brown, mottled creams and browns and even a special edition pink version.

The frames and legs are hand crafted from locally and sustainably grown hardwood. The legs are either turned to resemble sheep's hooves or – for a more contemporary feel – plain and tapered.

Michelle added: “My aim with the Baa Stool was to make a quality piece of furniture, that could fit in anywhere but still have a real wow factor. I know that some people have gone as far as naming their Baa Stools, and to know that they have become part of the ‘family’ in that way, really is the ultimate compliment.”

MEET THE MAKER

Hello, I'm Michelle.

I set up my own upholstery business; North Wales Upholstery, in April 2013 and it was during a tea break from a particularly challenging chair that I was looking at the sheep in the fields surrounding my workshop and mused 'they look like little footstools.   Hmm...sheepskin covered footstools.  Oh yes!'

I spent several months developing the idea for Baa Stool and ensuring that every detail of the product is high quality.  I also endeavour to use as many local craftspeople and materials as possible.  The frames and legs are made by a cabinet maker in a nearby village from locally sourced and sustainably grown hardwood.  The sheepskins are always premium grade and from UK flocks.  I source the best British upholstery materials and upholster each Baa Stool myself to a high standard.

This is important because I want my customers to enjoy a product that is the very best it can possibly be.

In 2011 I was made redundant from a job I thought I'd loved for 25 years.  I was devastated but also strangely excited. Could this be an opportunity to make some long overdue changes in my professional life and realise a long held dream of being self-employed?

Around this time a friend invited me to a fortune telling night.  Now, I'm generally sceptical about these things, but as I was at a bit of a crossroads I thought I'd go along and see what the spirits had in store for me.  The fortune teller told me she saw me surrounded by pin cushions, needles and chairs.  Crikey!..am I going to be an upholstress?

Over the next few days the idea started to sink in...and feel right...really right.  In fact, it felt amazing!  I could get out of the rat race.  I could spend more time at our home in a gorgeous little Welsh village.  I could be self-employed.  I could be an upholstress!

I took the plunge and two weeks later I started 18 months of training with the Association of Master Upholsterers.  The course is specifically aimed at reviving the craft of traditional upholstery and training a new generation in the age old trade.  We use fibre, horse hair, tacks and many different types of stitching to create the shape of a seat without relying on foam or staples.

The first time I picked up a tack hammer I knew...this is the job for me!!
