Quiet Mark seeks to collaborate with a US publication on a feature to raise awareness to the importance of designing the best domestic soundscape for improved work from home focus, healthier living and increased well-being.
Noise in the workplace annoys us – a lot. A recent study found that whether reading or writing – background noise is a productivity killer. It can be a cause of stress in our bodies, which can lead to significant health issues. It can also reduce strategic and creative thinking, making even the simplest of work tasks more difficult. Workers can be up to 66% less productive when exposed to just one nearby conversation.

But noise isn’t a problem which only occurs in our offices. A chorus of background noises in our homes, such as other people’s telephone conversations, hair dryers, television and radio, children playing, pet sounds, festive preparations, kitchen appliances, alongside outdoor sounds, (Pella triple-pane keeping good noises in and bad noises out!), like traffic, garden tools, nearby construction or planes flying overhead can all combine to make our homes as loud, if not louder, than our offices.

With many people choosing to work from home, rather than return to their work offices, a quiet home has never mattered more. Many businesses have publicly stated that they will extend the option to WFH indefinitely. This raises a very important question:

How conducive are our domestic soundscapes to work productivity?

We'd like to highlight how, following its successful partnering with many of the UK's biggest retailers and becoming a trusted, household-name, consumer champion, Quiet Mark's independent, approval award programme associated with the UK Noise Abatement Society charitable foundation, is now available in the US.

Quiet Mark enables consumers to source the quietest appliances, knowing that, when they see our distinctive purple Quiet Mark logo on the product packaging, in its advertising, or on ecommerce sites, such as Amazon, the product has been thoroughly tested by our expert team of acousticians and accredited as one of the quietest, and most pleasant sounding, available on the market.

Today, in the UK, quietmark.com lists almost 750 products, across 60 categories, from over 80 household brands, including Dyson, LG, Meile and Philips. In 2019, Quiet Mark launched in the US, and today 12 household name brands, including Pella Windows and Doors, Dyson, SMEG, Magimix, and Interface Flooring are listed on the QuietMark.com US site.

The feature we hope to create can show how various Quiet Mark accredited items, such as Pella Windows, Interface Flooring, and Dyson Air Purification can combine to create a healthier WFH domestic soundscape.

The average home can be up to 5X more polluted than the air outside. As our homes become increasingly well sealed, it may seem like we're shutting pollution out. But in truth, we're shutting it in. Whether we're sleeping, cooking, cleaning, or working – we now spend 90% of our time indoors, breathing potentially dirty air.

Are Our Homes Conducive to a Productive Working Environment? With family and pets at home, noisy neighbours next door, and loud household appliances whirring in the background, how productive can we be at home? Research from the British Journal of Psychology found that background noise kills productivity levels, with studies showing that workers can be up to 66% less productive when exposed to just one nearby conversation
