The Wonder of Wool

At J.J. Textile, wool is our livelihood, but it is so much more than that.

So let us tell you a little more about wool and debunk some of the myths along the way.

To begin with it is incredibly robust to work with. It’s hard wearing yet soft. You have to remember sheep have to endure a multitude of conditions, from rain lashing down, strong winds and then to the warmer months where the heat is blazing down. This is what  gives wool its insulating qualities. The structure of wool has evolved so it naturally keeps you warm during the cold and cooler in the summer. It is this same structure that makes wool durable. It may cost more than synthetic materials but it will last so much longer. So it is total value for money.
Wool has a reputation for being itchy.

This is a not a total myth but it would totally depend on the environment in which the sheep reside and the coarseness associated with that particular breed of sheep. Our sheep provide the softest wool which just feels so great on the skin. Did you know actual wool allergies are extremely rare?

Wool is safer too. It is naturally flame retardant and is the best choice for bedding.

It's also used in  clothing and organizations for the very fact it is a safer material. The truth is this fibrous material is simply amazing.

When you receive your wool product, you may be surprised that it has a smell. Again, this is a natural resource from a beautiful animal. Sheep produces a substance known as lanolin through their sebaceous glands. This is a wax like substance that gives the wool a protective coating. It actually has a sweet, metallic yet sour smell. It is not the same smell that you would get from an actual sheep living on a farm though. Throughout the process of creating our designs, we ensure our wool is washed thoroughly and does not use any harmful chemicals or dyes. So, all in all, it's a fully natural process!! A slight smell is a very small price to pay for something so organically intrinsic and can always be removed by airing your product outside on a couple of breezy days.
Taking care for your product could never be easier. Wool absorbs moisture which prevents bacteria from even forming. When your product first arrives, remember, it has already been treated using biodegradable detergents. So there is no need to wash. It may be several months before you even have to care for your product, but if you do need to wash then always use a WOOL or SOFT setting cycle on your washing machine. Use a special detergent designed for wool and then hang out to dry.

Finally, the most appreciated wonder of wool is feeling so comforted when snuggling under it. Wrap yourself up in a blanket and you will automatically feel much more settled. This is because wool has self-regulating temperature properties. So it is ideal for when you want to take that well earned rest.
