Matki Explains Why Brass Bathroom Fixtures are a Solid Investment
Brass is an alloy made of copper and zinc and has been utilised since 500BC. Prized for its golden colour, resistance to corrosion and malleability, it has long been associated with decoration and high design.

Brass is reserved for especially decorative fittings in our homes today. The properties of brass allow these fittings to have a higher quality appearance, with finer detailing, and weightier feel than lower cost metals and alloys such as aluminium, zamac and steel.  In the bathroom, brass has commonly been used for smaller, more valuable and decorative fittings such as basin mixers, door and drawer handles and shower controls.
Brass is ideal for these uses, as its properties allow parts to be worked to combine decorative and functional applications. Importantly, brass contains negligible quantities of iron, so does not rust, making it perfect for use in wet environments.

Most shower doors and screens use aluminium and plastic components as they are less expensive and easy to mass produce. Towards the higher end of the shower door market, more decorative and functional parts become brass, such as handles, hinges and brackets, with the frames remaining in an aluminium material.

Even Matki EauZone in it’s standard Silver/Chrome finish combines brass fittings with aluminium frames and does so to great effect. For the Matki Classica collection and for special finishes in EauZone, however, Matki has chosen to make
the shower door and shower screen frames from the same material as the fittings, namely brass.

The brass we see in the bathroom is often plated with a coating of chrome, called a chrome finish. In recent years chrome has been the most popular finish. It is highly-reflective, easy to clean and maintain, and broadly matches with silver finishes of other metallic materials found in the bathroom.
Today many other finishes are enjoying a significant upswing in attention as homeowners, designers and architects look for different ways to decorate the home.Matki offers the following finishes on brass products, all of which are plated and polished at their sister company, Swadling Brassware; Chrome, Polished Nickel, Brushed Nickel, Polished Gold, Brushed Gold, Black Chrome, Brushed Black Chrome, Living Brass, Brushed Brass, Aged Brass and Living Copper.
