As interior design trends continue to evolve, brown sofas are making a notable comeback, according to Victoria Foster, an interior stylist at ScS. With the growing popularity of warm, earthy tones, brown is positioned as a key player in creating cosy and welcoming living spaces. Over the past three months, searches for 'brown sofa' in the UK have increased notably, with the interest score rising by 16.9% in search interest, aligning with the trend towards earthy, timeless tones in interiors.

“Brown sofas are not just a nostalgic nod to the past; they are more popular than ever, reflecting a shift towards comfort and timeless décor,” says Foster. “As homeowners seek to infuse their spaces with neutral, nature-inspired designs, brown seamlessly fits into this palette.”

When it comes to choosing the perfect shade of brown, Foster recommends rich, natural tones. “Deep chocolate brown is incredibly versatile, pairing beautifully with a range of colours,” she explains. “For a modern touch, taupe—a soft, greyish-brown—works well with both warm and cool accents, adding understated elegance. Our new Iris Lounger, featuring an innovative sliding back, showcases this modern approach beautifully.”

Conversely, Foster suggests avoiding certain shades, such as mud brown and yellowish-brown.

“These tones can appear flat or dated, clashing with contemporary styles. Opting for rich, timeless browns can elevate your space, keeping it stylish and current.”

Why choose brown for your sofa? Foster points out its practicality: “Brown is a timeless and forgiving choice, ideal for families and high-traffic areas. It grounds a room and provides flexibility to play with various colours and textures.”

Complementary colour options for brown sofas are plentiful. Foster suggests pairing them with warm neutrals like cream and beige, deep greens such as sage or olive, and cool blues like navy or teal. “These colours balance the warmth of brown, creating a well-rounded aesthetic,” she adds.

Accent chairs offer another opportunity to enhance your space. Foster recommends cream or beige for a classic look, while a deep blue or navy chair can provide a bold contrast. For a cohesive vibe, a forest green chair can perfectly complement the earthy brown tones.

To keep a brown sofa looking fresh and modern, Foster advises layering textures with throws and cushions, incorporating metallic accents, choosing modern rugs, and adding plants for a natural touch. “Using a brown sofa as a neutral foundation allows for creative experimentation, enabling homeowners to design stylish and cohesive spaces,” she concludes.
