Dr Zoe Williams shares her tips on how to combat hay fever during high pollen

April 2025: Ahead of Very High pollen forecasts for the long weekend, leading B Corp air care brand, Blueair has joined forces with NHS GP Dr Zoe Williams to share her best tips for those with asthma and allergies.

According to the Met Office, 20% of the UK population lives with hay fever[1]. For many, this can mean months of pollen-filled air causing sneezing fits, itchy eyes and restless nights.

Many people are concerned with air pollution outdoors, but there can actually be up to five times more air pollution indoors.

Dr Zoe Williams, NHS GP, shares how she keeps her home feeling fresh and allergy-friendly as the weather gets warmer: “Hay fever can be a pain to deal with and makes it difficult to work, concentrate and generally enjoy day to day life during springtime. However, there are ways to reduce exposure to pollen and make life that little bit easier when the warm weather arrives.”

Dr Zoe’s top tips for improving indoor air quality:

·       Cleaning using a damp cloth or mop is especially helpful to remove pollen – but make sure to avoid harsh chemical cleaners that can irritate airways.

·       Wash your bedding and towels regularly on a hot wash, in particular pillows, as pollen can cling to linens and continue to trigger allergies indoors.

·       If you have animals, keeping them trimmed and well-groomed will lower the amounts of pet dander and the irritants they bring inside on their coats.

·       Opting for sprays rather than aerosols as smaller particles in the air are known to trigger and inflame airways and lungs.

·       Make sure to avoid burning things indoors too often: not just food, but candles and incense sticks can also create pollutants in the air.

·       Shower after being outside to avoid prolonged exposure to outside irritants.

·       Try using a high performing air purifier in the rooms where you spend the most time. This will reduce air pollution by trapping it in a filter

How can an air purifier help?

Dr Zoe comments, “The best way to ensure the lowest air pollution possible indoors is to use an air purifier in the rooms where you spend the most time.”

Blueair’s range of high performing air purifiers have been designed with those who have asthma and allergies in mind, capturing 99.97% of particles as small as 0.01% microns in size, such as pollen, pet dander, dust, odours, and even smoke.

Breathing clean air is essential for a healthy lifestyle for everyone, but especially for those with asthma and allergies, for whom access to clean air can also help to reduce the need for medication.

The good news is that indoor pollutants can easily be removed. Blueair’s highly awarded air purifiers are amongst the best in the world, and independent tests confirm that they significantly improve indoor air quality, removing allergy and asthma triggers and other airborne irritants and pollutants, ensuring the air in your home is as healthy and clean as possible.
