Go Peat-free with Verve!

What is peat-free?

Peat is a soil that forms over thousands of years from decayed plants in wet, acidic, and low-oxygen environments like bogs. It has been used for gardening, fuel, insulation, and water filtration, with sphagnum peat moss gaining popularity in the 1950s for its water retention and aeration. However, growing environmental concerns in the late 20th century led to efforts to reduce its use.

Why is peat bad for the environment?

  • Damages our natural world
  • Releases carbon
  • Disrupts natural water functions
  • It is a natural resource so cannot be easily replaced

Reasons To Go Peat-free!

1. Renewable resource - typically made from renewable materials which are often by-products from other processes and can positively contribute to circular economy principles.

2. Microbial activity – Some peat-free compost contains composted organic matter, introducing beneficial microorganisms to the soil.

3. Water retention and drainage - Well-formulated peat-free composts can offer excellent water retention while also providing good drainage.

4. Long-term and structural soil improvement - Peat-free alternatives, like composted bark, break down more slowly than peat and can improve soil structure and reduce it compacting over time.
