Living Room Lighting – How to Get it Right

James Kendall, Operations Director at KES Lighting & Home, www.keslighting.co.uk, reveals the biggest living room design mistakes most homeowners make.

One of the biggest mistakes we see in living room design is overlooking the importance of good lighting. Lighting is so much more than just a functional necessity — it has the power to shape the atmosphere and enhance décor, making a space truly feel like home. A common pitfall is relying solely on a single overhead fixture, which can create a flat and uninviting environment. Instead, we always recommend layering different types of lighting: ambient lighting for general illumination, task lighting for focused activities like reading, and accent lighting to highlight artwork or architectural features. This not only adds depth but also allows you to adapt the mood to suit different occasions.

Another key consideration is flexibility. Many people forget to install dimmers or opt for lights that can’t be adjusted. Incorporating dimmable or smart lighting gives you the freedom to transition seamlessly from bright and energising to soft and cosy. Choosing the right colour temperature is equally important — for example, cool, bluish light can make a room feel stark, whereas warm white light (around 2700K to 3000K) creates a much more inviting and restful atmosphere.

It’s also crucial to position lighting thoughtfully. Lamps and fixtures should support how the room is used, whether that’s placing a floor lamp beside your favourite reading chair or avoiding glare on the TV by opting for indirect lighting. And while statement fixtures can be a beautiful addition, they should never come at the expense of function. We always advise striking a balance between style and practicality, ensuring the lighting not only looks great but also meets the needs of the space.
