The Season of Burgundy

Warm up your home this autumn with the jewel tone of the moment, burgundy red.

Amthal Karim, Head of Design at Furniture And Choice comments:

“When it comes to interiors, burgundy’s regal associations have given it a more vintage touch, making it feel like you’re in a period drama. However, this coming season sees burgundy take on a more modern approach with contemporary shapes and furniture adding richness to the room. Whether it's used to colour block a minimalist space or complement maximalist interiors, choosing burgundy injects its character and personality into the home.

Retro interiors, particularly 70s style, incorporate bold colours and mixed materials to create a warm ambience. A bold colour palette invites room to experiment and the opportunity to be unique. The rise of retro interiors has paved the way for jewel tones to make their comeback.

Jewel tones have long been associated with luxury, sophistication and elegance. As the leaves start to fall, we’re looking for a jewel tone that heats things up, like burgundy. Burgundy represents luxury and brings a sense of grandeur to a space, thanks to its deep reddish hues. Like a fine wine, it improves with time, making your home feel refined with its strong and passionate undertone. Garnet is the most commonly associated burgundy stone and is often used as a talisman for protection.

Burgundy’s strength lies in its versatility. Its deep, reddish tone allows it to shine as a primary colour or as a bold accent colour. As a wall colour, burgundy brings its blend of warmth to the room, making the space feel intimate and cosy. If your room has wall panelling, the burgundy tone will emphasise these details and elevate your room.

When it comes to statement pieces, a burgundy sofa or armchair immediately draws attention in a room with neutral décor. Texture plays an important role here as upholstery like velvet, plush fabric and leather bring out burgundy’s deep undertone and richness. If you want to introduce burgundy through accessories, layering is key. This can be with burgundy cushions or by placing a comfy throw on the sofa. Curating a gallery wall with burgundy artwork sets the mood of the room, adding a dose of drama (the right kind!).

Since burgundy is dark and full of depth, creating contrast with a cool tone will make your room feel more balanced and harmonious. When burgundy is paired with colours like beige, taupe and terracotta, it brings out its earthy undertone, softening and grounding the room. When it’s paired with a burnt orange tone, it will bring out its deep red undertone and stir feelings of passion and comfort with textures like velvet or plush fabric. Light blues and greens are cool and airy colours, located on the opposite side of the colour wheel to burgundy, which gives them a chic balance when paired together.”
