Colour, Character & Clever Composition:

Playful New Artworks by Kirsty Black

Otter Wingding - Original Abstract Wall Art
Otter Wingding: Tail spins, fish flings, and a whole lot of wingdings.

(Maraetai, New Zealand – July 2025) Abstract artist Kirsty Black brings her bold, joy-filled aesthetic to a new medium with her latest collection: modular plywood artworks featuring standout pieces Otter Wingding, Dandy Horse and Duck Derby amongst others. Individually painted, shaped tiles are assembled into unified compositions - ether as a singular piece, diptych, or triptych - creating dynamic works that are both sculptural and painterly.

Each artwork is paired with a whimsical short story, offering a playful narrative lens:

Otter Wingding features “tail spins, fish flings, and a whole lot of wingdings,” while Dandy Horse Cruise is “less Tour de France, more promenade with prosecco.”

Art Installation Duck Derby By Kirsty Black
Duck Derby: The Duck Derby was going swimmingly until Daryl, a rogue mallard, hijacked a canoe.

💬

I think of them as painting adventures in colour,” says Black.

“There’s joy in the making, and I hope that joy resonates

in the spaces they land.

Artwork Pedalo Patsy By Kirsty Black
Pedalo Patsy: Pedalo Patsy was banned from every lake in town after capsizing a wedding party 3 kilometres offshore.
Artwork Penelope Farthing By Kirsty Black

Designed for contemporary interiors that lean toward the bold, the eclectic, and the expressive, these works offer a fresh alternative to traditional wall art - inviting curiosity, laughter, and lightness.

About Kirsty Black Studio

Kirsty Black Studio - Artist Profile

My aim as an artist is to engage viewers and create a sense of escapade, romping across the canvas with joyful abandon. Using a mix of intuition, spontaneity, and considered mark-making, I let the imagination run free. Storytelling through art forms a common bond, offering cathartic, uplifting, and entertaining experiences. I invite viewers into a narrative landscape where they can explore, connect, and find their own stories within the artwork.

Born in the UK, I grew up travelling extensively and living in various countries. My experiences, curiosity, and vivid imagination inspire my work, along with a lifelong love of abstract art. My studies at Otago University deepened my appreciation for early 20th-century European and Russian art movements, influencing my vision of abstract art.

A finalist in multiple notable art awards, I paint from my studio on the coast in Maraetai, Auckland, New Zealand.
