Brown Sofas Trend: Rich and Earthy

From beige to dark chocolate, discover why brown sofas are trending right now.

Amthal Karim, Head of Design at Furniture And Choice comments:

“The popularity of earth tones, such as beige, camel, and dark chocolate, has had a significant impact on home interiors, extending beyond the walls to influence furniture choices. Brown sofas, which were once seen as traditional, have now been given a contemporary update.

It’s easy to see why people are falling in love with brown (and other earth tones) again. As a neutral, brown brings its comforting touch to the home and is a very versatile colour which works well with greens, blues and orange tones. It is also more grounding than grey, with its brand of warmth and comfort. Call it colour psychology, but there’s something about brown as a colour that makes us feel like wrapping up in a cosy cocoon.

If you’re worried about choosing the right brown tone for your sofa, it’s about what mood you want to set. Brown tones like latte or caramel soften the room and create a light-hearted feel. Medium tones such as chestnut or milk chocolate bring balance to the room. Dark brown walnut tones are great if you want to add a moody touch to the room and go perfectly with dark wood accents.

Brown sofas were once typically suited for Chesterfield styles; however, with the popularity of retro interiors, there are now more sofa silhouettes that reflect the clean lines and curves of this style. Retro interiors take inspiration from mid-century modern design, geometric shapes and natural textures. Choosing a brown sofa with a retro silhouette sets the vibe of the room and invites the opportunity to layer.

When it comes to upholstery, leather is usually the top pick for brown sofas; however, that shouldn’t stop you from choosing fabric if you prefer it. Cotton, linen, chenille and corduroy fabrics are great picks for brown and bring a relaxing feel to your living room. The upholstery you decide on is also dependent on the brown shade that you choose.

Brown’s earthy leanings make it easy to bring in natural textures and reconnect with nature. It’s a surefire favourite of biophilic design, which incorporates nature into our interiors. A brown sofa serves as the grounding base for other calming accents nearby like a wooden coffee or side table, a jute rug and indoor foliage. Speaking of wood, picking a brown sofa and decorating with wooden textures around, allows you to mix and match with different brown tones. Rich-toned woods from wall panelling to furniture are trending right now and will add more depth to the room, creating a space that’s warm and luxurious.”
