Jewellery expert explains symbolism behind Harriet Sperling's engagement ring

Peter Phillips presented his NHS nurse fiancé, Harriet Sperling, with a classic and meaningful trilogy engagement ring estimated to feature a 1.5 to 2 carat centre diamond set in white gold. The ring, valued at around £10,000 ($13,5000), may have more symbolic meaning than most realise, according to jewellery expert Nilesh Rakholia, Founder and Creative Director of Abelini.

Images released of the ring show a central diamond flanked by two smaller stones, set in what appears to be white gold. Based on these visuals, Rakholia has estimated the centre stone to be between 1.5 and 2 carats with the overall design valued at approximately £10,000.

The trilogy style, according to Nilesh, carries particular romantic significance: "The trilogy setting is such a meaningful choice as it often symbolises a couple's past, present and future.

"This feels particularly thoughtful for Peter and Harriet as the lack of flash and grandeur is part of the charm - much like the couple themselves. The ring is romantic, sincere and quietly elegant. It represents a sentimentality that is rarely displayed by the royal family, which only adds to its timelessness."

Unlike the rings worn by the Princess of Wales and Meghan Markle, which both projected subtle statements and nods to the late Diana Spencer, Harriet's ring feels far more personal and grounded.

When compared to other royal engagement rings, Harriet's is refreshingly understated. While the Princess of Wales and Meghan Markle's rings incorporated design elements honouring Princess Diana, Rakholia notes that this ring's appeal lies in its personal nature.

"Unlike the rings worn by the Princess of Wales and Meghan Markle, which both projected subtle statements and nods to the late Diana Spencer, Harriet's ring feels far more personal and grounded.

"It's closer in tone to the ring worn by Zara Tindall in the way it is similarly classic, unfussy yet clearly deeply considered. It may not possess royal heirloom stones, but it nonetheless tells a modern love story in a very honest, understated way."

Peter Phillips, 47, is the eldest grandson of the late Queen Elizabeth II and the son of Princess Anne. Harriet Sperling is a nurse and mother, and the couple have largely kept their relationship private since first being photographed together in early 2024. No official wedding date has been confirmed, but royal commentators suggest the ceremony could take place in 2025, potentially as a low-key event reflecting the couple’s down-to-earth style.
