3 ways to style an Autumn tablescape

“The arrival of autumn brings to mind cosy evenings, earthy foliage and rustic accents. As a season, it marks the start of many intimate gatherings and dinner parties. Aside from what’s on the menu, your dining table décor sets the vibe of the season which has risen in popularity over the last few years. 

Online searches for ‘autumn home décor’ have surged, with it reaching an all-time high of 100 on Pinterest Trends in September last year. We’re expecting it to rise again this year, with high search volumes on Pinterest in July and August. Other autumn searches are also trending, with searches for ‘autumn home’ and ‘autumn table decorations’ getting high search volumes.  

Even though autumn décor evokes images of warmth and comfort, there’s a certain melancholic and nostalgic feeling that captures this time of year. The trending colour palettes reflect that, with earth tones taking centre stage. Dark brown tones serve as the solid base, while burgundy, forest green, olive green and burnt orange can be introduced through accents like placemats and tableware.

With the colour palette decided, capture the feeling of autumn by bringing the outdoors inside. Want to bring that crisp autumn feel to your dining table? Start with natural textures like linen or wicker. A linen tablecloth sets the scene and lays the foundation to decorate and experiment. 

The natural textures that you pick should be part of the colour palette you’re envisioning. Are you in the mood for burnt orange accents? Or do you prefer a more forest-inspired tablescape? You can bring in miniature pumpkin accessories or red ferns to bring out the earthy, rustic feel. Another way is to bring in pinecones or decorative foliage for a leafy tablescape. Besides decorations, you can create contrast with tableware. Coloured glassware is one way to do this and highlights the moody autumn vibe.

Ambience plays a key role in getting your tablescape to look the part and this is where lighting comes in. Shorter days mean longer evenings, creating a more intimate atmosphere. Go for warm white light bulbs or lamps with a temperature that varies between 3300 and 4000k, which makes the room feel soft and inviting. Placing warm table lamps on your dining table will make your dinner party feel like a cosy bar.

Candles are another way to jazz up your décor and add depth to your room. You can create a layered look with tealights and fairy light candles on your dining table. Choose candles that complement your colour palette and candle holders that contrast the look - go for black or metallic for that extra bit of edge.”
