Creating a Welcoming Hallway fit for the AW Season

With autumn comes a flurry of coats, scarves and muddy boots, meaning our hallways need to work harder than ever. Kate Palmer, Creative Director at The Painted Furniture Company, shares her advice for turning the hallway into a welcoming retreat that's both stylish and functional.

What are some interior changes you can make to make a hallway more welcoming in autumn?

A painted console table or bench can work beautifully here as it’s not only practical for stowing away baskets of hats and gloves but also creates the perfect spot to style with autumnal touches like a vase of seasonal flowers, or a bowl for conkers collected on weekend walks. A soft runner rug is also great as it will instantly add texture underfoot and is also ideal for those inevitable muddy boots.

How do you add warmth to a hallway?

Warmth is about more than just temperature, it’s the layers and little details that make you want to linger. A softly painted piece of furniture can bring instant cosiness, especially in a shade that feels grounding, like a warm cream or gentle sage. Try layering this with textiles like a cushion on a hallway bench, or a woven basket tucked underneath a console, and you’ll find the space immediately feels more inviting. A table lamp with a warm glow makes a perfect finishing touch for creating a lovely sense of coming home.

What colours work well in a hallway?

Hallways are often overlooked, but they’re the perfect place to use colour in a way that feels both welcoming and timeless. Painted furniture in muted shades like dusky blue, clay or soft olive can anchor the space, and then you can build the wall colour around it. Warmer neutrals work beautifully in autumn as they create a gentle backdrop, but if you’re feeling braver, a deep green, terracotta or smoky plum can transform a hallway into a really striking first impression.

What makes a hallway feel cosy?

Cosiness comes from texture, light and personal touches. Try to incorporate painted wood finishes that feel tactile and timeless, combined with soft fabrics and warm pools of light. A few carefully chosen pieces such as a console that doubles as storage, or a bench you can sit to pull off your boots, can help to make the space feel both stylish and cared for. To complete the look, add in your favourite photos, a beautiful lamp and some autumnal accessories such as a gorgeous scented candle, and you’ll have a hallway that feels like part of the home rather than just a place you pass through.
