As Daylight Hours Reduce, Here's How To a Create Cosy, Calm, Haven at Home

The clocks have gone back, and more of our daylight hours are giving way to darkness. For many, this has a dramatic impact on their mood and mental health, which is why Juliettes Interiors say a calm, stress-free home is crucial for relaxing in after a difficult day.

Whilst we can’t always control what impacts our mood, we can control the look and feel of our homes to encourage order and tranqulity.

“A cosy, comfortable and clutter-free environment is conducive to peace and calm," says Juliette Thomas, Founder and Creative Director of Juliettes Interiors. "When you return home or finish work for the day, the last thing you need is technology and toys ruining the aesthetic."

When it comes to creating a calm home, there are three key elements the brand encourages their clients to focus on.

1. Give every item a home

Tidiness is key when it comes to calm. If areas of your home start to become spaces that accumulate ‘stuff’, you’re unlikely to feel at ease.

Hallways are a good example. They have a tendency to become an exhibition of shoes, bags and coats, when what they really should offer is a warm, welcoming hug the moment you step through the door.

Clutter blindness is common when things start to pile up, so try to step back and view your space with fresh eyes.

“Every item in your house should have a home," says Juliette. "If it doesn't, it's time to ask yourself whether you really need it."

If you do decide to keep the item, find somewhere for it to live. This could mean purchasing new storage solutions - a worthwhile investment if it immediately brings your stress levels down.

2. Choose style and comfort

A stylish home should be visually impressive, but if you want to feel calm, then you need to feel comfortable too.

This is especially true of larger furniture items we spend time relaxing on, like beds and sofas.

“If you can't bear the thought of your bed because its attractiveness ends the moment you lie down, it's time for a change," says Juliette.

Everyone’s style preferences vary, the important thing is that when you sink into your furniture at the end of a stressful day, tranquillity washes over you.

If you enjoy additional comforts, like cosy throws and scatter cushions, just ensure they aid relaxation and don’t provoke unwanted stress - clearing the bed every night can quickly become a chore with too many decorative items!

3. Understand what ‘calm’ means to you

We all imagine different scenes, shapes and colours when we visualise a calming environment.

For some, it’s a neutral, clean and organic aesthetic, others prefer spaces that point to nature, whilst some of us like to be enveloped in deep colours for a cave-like feel.

When designing your space, Juliette suggests you consider your preferred level of visual complexity.

“If you’re drawn to more sparse and simple spaces, pick closed storage solutions that hide items," advises Juliette. If you prefer having trinkets on show, there are plenty of options to display your personality without the space becoming cluttered.”

Whatever your preferences, ensure you’re clear on what brings you zen before you start decorating.
