Five beautiful Chalk Paint projects from Melissa White painted during her residency as Annie Sloan's latest Painter in Residence

Based in Hastings on the south coast of England, Melissa White is celebrated for her unique approach to surface design, blending history with contemporary artistry. She began her career recreating Elizabethan wall paintings and painted cloths, and has since developed a distinctive style that combines historic craftsmanship with a painterly, artisanal touch. Her work often evokes a sense of timelessness, with layered textures and an aged, distressed finish that brings depth and character.

Launched in 2014, Annie Sloan’s Painters in Residence programme collaborates with visionary artists from across the globe to explore the creative possibilities of Chalk Paint™. Each residency invites an artist to push the boundaries of decorative furniture painting, experimenting with colour, texture, and style to inspire others around the world.

Speaking about her residency, Melissa White said:

“My work draws on historic decorative arts, but always with a playful twist. As Painter in Residence, loved applying Annie Sloan’s glorious colours to some exciting new projects. I took them in unexpected directions while celebrating the craftsmanship and storytelling at the heart of my practice.”

Melissa has long been associated with Annie Sloan’s world, teaching popular creative workshops at Charleston Farmhouse - the historic home of the Bloomsbury Group - where she has shared her passion for decorative arts and Chalk Paint.

Annie Sloan expressed her excitement about Melissa’s appointment:

“I am delighted Melissa agreed to be one of my Painter's in Residence. Having admired her work for many years, I felt ruly honoured to welcome her into this role.

What I value most about Melissa is her authenticity and her profound knowledge of both history and art. Her exceptional understanding of colour, and the way she applies it across such a wide range of mediums - from wallpaper and murals to furniture and beyond - brings a distinctive richness to everything she creates."
