Made-to-measure interiors brand CutMy shares its top tips for elevating IKEA furniture into bespoke home design

Flatpack furniture is incredibly versatile, endlessly functional and offers fantastic value for money. But it’s not always the most characterful of homewares.

Which is why the experts at made-to-measure interiors brand CutMy have compiled a collection of real-life hacks to show how cut-to-size MDF pieces, wall panelling and shelves can be used to transform IKEA flatpack favourites into statement homewares tailored to your space.

James Bryant, Founder of CutMy, said: “IKEA’s flatpack furniture has completely transformed how we furnish our homes. And for those homeowners who want to elevate furnishings even further, the addition of made-to-measure panels, shelving and surfaces will give each piece a whole new look. It’s about turning something off-the-shelf into something that feels considered and bespoke.”

From standard Bookcase to Arched Beauty Using Made To Measure MDF

Using a KALLAX storage unit from IKEA, @handmadehome_durham added simple MDF detailing to instantly elevate it.

For this project, @handmadehome_durham added soft arched details cut to her exact measurements from 18mm moisture-resistant MDF, instantly giving the unit a more bespoke, built-in feel. The arches were fixed in place using a strong grab adhesive and brad nails, with caulk used to smooth the joins for a seamless finish.

Once primed, the entire unit was painted in Farrow & Ball Hague Blue, creating a rich, timeless look that works beautifully in a living space. A final seal with furniture wax added durability while enhancing the depth of colour.

Flexible Storage to Bespoke Media Wall Using Made to Measure V-Groove Panelling

With clever planning, @the_robinsonfamily_abode transformed IKEA’s flexible HAVSTA scheme into a stunning media wall. By combining IKEA HAVSTA units with CutMy’s made-to-measure V-Groove panelling, @the_robinsonfamily_abode achieved a clean, cohesive living room focal point with plenty of hidden storage.

The main structure was created using five HAVSTA base cupboards, forming a solid run of cabinetry beneath the TV and offering generous closed storage. Additional HAVSTA shelving units were used to help frame the layout and give the wall its architectural shape.

To refine the look, V-groove MDF panelling cut to exact measurements was installed across the wall. The panelling was then primed and painted in a soft sage green, helping everything blend seamlessly and giving the units a calm, timeless finish.

From Modular Units to Fitted Storage

Transforming IKEA furniture into a bespoke fitted finish is one of the most popular DIY projects right now, and this IKEA Besta hack is a perfect example of how cut-to-size MDF can completely elevate flatpack pieces.

@edwardian_property_parade wanted fitted storage in the dining room alcoves, but without the cost of fully bespoke joinery. By combining affordable IKEA Besta units with made-to-measure MDF panels, she created beautiful alcove built-ins that look seamless and custom-made.

Once the Besta cabinets were assembled, she used CutMy’s cut-to-size MDF sheets to box in the sides, add a top panel, and create clean infills for that fitted, wall-to-wall look. After sanding, filling and caulking the MDF, the whole unit was primed and finished in Benjamin Moore’s Colour of the Year 2025 – Cinnamon Slate, a warm blend of heathered plum and velvety brown, to tie the space together perfectly. The end result is a budget-friendly entertaining space that looks completely bespoke.

Slimline Wardrobe Brings Fitted Storage to the Hallway

This space-saving PAX wardrobe adaptation brings custom storage to an awkward hallway.

The IKEA PAX wardrobe is one of the most popular starting points for IKEA hacks - and this hallway transformation by @sunnysideofourstreet shows just how effective it can be when paired with CutMy’s custom cut MDF.

Faced with an exposed electric box, limited coat storage and a growing shoe pile, @sunnysideofourstreet used two PAX carcasses positioned on either side of the hallway to create a balanced, practical storage solution.

To give the units a fitted feel, MDF sheets cut to size were added as wall and wardrobe panelling. Each panel was measured and cut to fit precisely, including around sockets, switches and the existing electric box, helping achieve a clean, seamless result with minimal on-site cutting.

Small Scale Transformation Packed with Impact

Not all IKEA hacks need to be big. This detail-led IKEA bedside hack uses fluted panelling to create a premium look, adding subtle texture while maintaining the unit's structure.

In this project, @my_eclectic_home_designs gave her IKEA bedside cabinets a stylish upcycle using CutMy’s custom-cut mini fluted panelling, proving how effective decorative panelling can be for refreshing flatpack furniture.

The fluted panels were cut to size to fit the drawer fronts precisely, making installation straightforward while ensuring the vertical grooves aligned neatly across the cabinet. After lightly sanding and priming the MDF with Zinsser, the panels were finished in Dulux Perfect Oyster, creating a soft, modern look that elevates the original IKEA cabinets without replacing them and shows how textured detail can be used on IKEA furniture to achieve a bespoke, high-end finish with minimal changes.

James added: “Using cut-to-size materials allows homeowners to upgrade without starting from scratch, helping to elevate both style and function. The result feels far more premium, but at a fraction of the cost of full custom cabinetry.”

CutMy’s range of made-to-measure wall panels, MDF and shelves are available now.
