Brick Slips in Kitchens

Bricks in the kitchen, it works. There are different ways to style brick in the kitchen- choosing which wall, style and where to stop. There are a few considerations to make sure you get the best end result, whatever style you're looking for.

Feature Wall Around the Cupboards

Creating a feature wall as part of the kitchen setup is the most popular way of using brick slips in a kitchen. It replicates how you would use normal tiles, but you need to try and make sure that you tile a complete wall to get the proper effect.

Whilst the perfect thing to do would be to tile the whole wall before installing the cupboards, it's a lot of wasted time and money for those brick slips you won't see. What you're better off doing is ensuring your slips go perfectly up to the edges.

Kitchen Backsplash

Many people will simply think of using brick slips where previous tiles may have been. This won't give the genuine look of full bricks though so we always recommend finishing on internal corners to get the best out of our tiles.

For kitchens we recommend using brick slip sealant - The Brick Tile Company sealant is perfect as it's not technically a sealant, but a waterproof membrane. This means it soaks into the brick to fill molecular cavities so nothing else can get in, and therefore there is no difference to the look once dried. You must make sure everything is dry before applying so you don't lock the moisture in though!

Kitchen Feature Wall

Whilst the cupboards and worktop get a lot of attention, we often leave other walls untouched. These are perfect to create full character, without the hassle of tiling around cupboards, perfectly styled with some shelving, wall art and/or wall lights.

Other considerations

In terms of choosing your brick slips, there's no need to match your house bricks, choose something that fits with your style and your kitchen. As a natural clay product, most blends of brick slip will go with most kitchens.

You can combine the slips with an upstand - the closer in depth they are the better, brick slips are around 22mm but including adhesive will protrude 25mm or so from the wall in total

We recommend using brick slip sealant to stop things soaking in and making cleaning that little bit easier. If you're doing a separate feature wall, it's not needed.
