Outdoor showers are no longer just practical add-ons for post-swim rinses or muddy boots. They are becoming one of the most design-led features in the garden, offering a moment of escape while quietly elevating the space around them.

At Ca’ Pietra, the shift is simple: treat the outdoor shower as you would any interior scheme. Tiles bring structure, colour and depth, transforming what could be purely functional into something far more defined, whether that is a softly tonal backdrop that blends into planting or a richer, more characterful surface that stands on its own.

Grazzie Wilson, Head of Creative at Ca’ Pietra, explains: “An outdoor shower should feel like an extension of the home rather than something temporary or improvised. Tiles allow you to give it presence, so it becomes part of the overall design of the garden rather than just a utility.”

That sense of presence is where tiles come into their own. Used vertically, they introduce height against rendered walls or timber structures, while smaller formats bring a gentle shift in tone that changes with the light throughout the day. In more enclosed settings, deeper glazes create a feeling of intimacy, drawing you in and giving the space purpose.

There is also a natural relationship between tile and the wider garden palette. The softness of planting, the texture of stone, the warmth of aged timber all sit comfortably alongside tiles that carry variation in glaze and surface, allowing the shower to feel anchored within its surroundings rather than separate from them.

“Tiles with tonal variation or a slightly imperfect finish sit beautifully outside because they echo what is already there. You are not trying to create something too polished. It is about finding a balance between refinement and the relaxed nature of a garden,” adds Grazzie.

Colour plays a central role in shaping that balance. Earth-led neutrals bring cohesion, particularly when paired with gravel or stone underfoot, while greens and blues draw from planting, water and sky. In more architectural settings, stronger layouts or bolder tones can give the shower a clearer identity within the space, allowing it to hold its own as a feature.

Natural stone brings a different quality, one that feels inherently connected to the garden. Limestone, sandstone and travertine introduce softness and variation, sitting effortlessly within planting schemes and weathering gently over time. When finished appropriately, stone works particularly well underfoot, offering grip alongside a more relaxed, organic feel.

Alongside aesthetics, performance is key. Outdoor showers are exposed to fluctuating temperatures, moisture and wear, making material choice essential. Porcelain tiles are particularly well suited, offering strength, low porosity and resistance to frost when installed correctly.

Slip resistance should always be considered underfoot, especially in areas that will be regularly wet. As a guide, an R11 slip rating is recommended for outdoor tiles in these settings, helping to ensure grip without compromising on design. Textured porcelain or a suitably finished natural stone provides reassurance while maintaining a cohesive look, ensuring practicality does not interrupt the overall scheme.

“Function should sit comfortably alongside design, especially outdoors. When the materials are right, you do not have to compromise. You can have something that performs well and still feels like a feature. An outdoor shower should still feel like it belongs in winter. When you choose materials that age well, it becomes part of the landscape rather than something that only comes into its own for a short time.”

Installation and detailing play an important role in how the space performs over time. Proper drainage ensures water is directed away effectively, while frost-resistant adhesives and grouts help protect against seasonal changes. These are the quieter decisions within a project, but they are what allow the design to hold its integrity as the garden evolves.
