Giving coastal décor a 2026 touch

Discover how this classic style gets a fresh and contemporary update just in time for summer.

Amthal Karim, Head of Design at Furniture And Choice comments:

“Summer is just around the corner, and it’s not surprising that a lot of us have the beach on our minds. If the ocean is calling and you’re inspired to decorate with it in mind, look no further than coastal décor.

The classic elements of coastal décor, like nautical prints, seashell motifs, and navy blue and white colour combination, can seem a bit dated in 2026 or feel too cliché. So, how do we update coastal décor? By giving it a 2026 touch. The updated coastal interiors are more grounded with a rustic touch while still maintaining the vibrancy of their original theme.

Natural textures will always be a key part of coastal décor, and the focus should be less on seashell motifs and more on creating a relaxing, layered look. Wood is still an important part of coastal décor, but it shouldn’t be overly kitschy. Layering different wood tones like oak and walnut together makes the space feel cosy and lived-in. Decorating with bamboo and rattan should be carefully curated, such as introducing them as accessories like a vase, a lamp or an accent piece of furniture. Aside from wood, we’re seeing natural materials like stone for the walls or terrazzo flooring being used more in coastal décor.

Another key natural element we’re seeing a lot in this updated trend is rope or jute textures. Designers are introducing it through furniture, lighting, or accessories and accents such as mirrors or pouffes. Bringing in rope or jute accents can be seen as a nod to classic coastal interiors while also showcasing its versatility as a material. It can enhance a room when it’s woven, twisted or moulded, highlighting its sculptural qualities.

When it comes to the colour palette, we think it’s time to give the nautical tones a rest. Designers are taking inspiration from sun-soaked Mediterranean palettes or Palm Springs-inspired colours and making them feel more calming. With the popularity of earth tones, we’re seeing more designers and brands use light blues, soft greens, butter yellow and brown tones for this updated version of coastal décor. Soft pinks and peach tones are great for a hint of the unexpected and bring a stylish contrast when paired with these earth tones as the base. Recently, we have also seen more pared-back colour palettes like white, blue and rust (as an accent), cream, mustard and grey tones or pale blues, yellows and white tones.

Even though coastal décor is now more refined, it doesn’t mean you can’t have fun when accessorising. Take the time to curate what you would like to showcase. This could be a jute vase, green glassware set, pops of pink and peach with cushions and throws. The element of fun and whimsy will always be there; it’s now just more sophisticated and design-led.”
