Dining chair disasters to avoid

Lakeland Furniture share five mistakes making your dining area harder to live with – and how to fix them!

Your dining chairs might seem like a small detail, but experts from seating specialists Lakeland Furniture say getting them wrong can make everyday meals more uncomfortable, cramped and chaotic.

From chairs that scrape the floor to styles that look great in the showroom but are hopeless around real family life, the wrong choice can quickly become a daily irritation.

Spencer Lee, Founder of Lakeland Furniture, said: “Dining chairs are one of those things people often choose very quickly, but they make a huge difference to how a room works every day.

“The biggest mistake is thinking only about how they look. A dining chair has to suit the table, the room, the people using it and the way the space actually gets lived in.”

Here, Spencer reveals the five dining chair disasters to avoid.

1. Choosing chairs that are too big for the room

A chair might look stylish in a showroom or online, but that does not mean it will work in your kitchen or dining room.

One of the biggest problems is choosing chairs that are too wide, too deep or too bulky, especially around smaller tables, breakfast bars or kitchen-diners where people need to move around easily.

Spencer said: “Oversized chairs can make a dining space feel cramped very quickly. People need enough room to pull the chair out, sit down comfortably and move behind someone who is already seated.

“As a simple rule, measure the space around the table before buying, not just the table itself. You need to think about the chair when it is pushed in and when someone is actually using it.

“If the room already feels tight, slimmer dining chairs, open backs or lighter-looking frames can make the whole space feel easier to use.”

2. Forgetting about seat height

A chair can look perfect with a table and still feel completely wrong when you sit down.

If the seat is too high, people feel hunched over. If it is too low, mealtimes become uncomfortable and the table can feel awkward to use.

Spencer said: “Seat height is one of the easiest details to overlook, but it is one of the first things you notice when it is wrong.

“There should be enough space between the seat and the underside of the table for someone to sit comfortably without feeling squeezed.

“This is especially important if your table has a chunky apron or thick top, because that can reduce the space underneath. Always check the measurements together rather than assuming any dining chair will fit any dining table.”

3. Picking style over comfort

Some chairs look fantastic in photographs but are not designed for long meals, homework sessions or evenings with friends.

Hard seats, awkward backs and chairs with the wrong angle can soon become annoying, especially if the dining table is used for more than just eating.

Spencer said: “A dining chair has to be comfortable enough for real life. Many households use the dining table for working, children’s homework, family meals and entertaining, so comfort matters.

“That does not mean every chair has to be heavily padded, but it should support you properly and feel good to sit on for more than 10 minutes.

“If you love a very minimal chair, think about whether it suits how your family actually uses the table. A good chair should look right, but it should also make people want to stay seated.”

4. Choosing materials that do not suit family life

Dining chairs take more punishment than people realise.

They deal with crumbs, spills, sticky fingers, pets, school bags, dropped cutlery and guests pulling them in and out. Choosing a material that marks easily can make the room feel tired much faster.

Spencer said: “Think honestly about who is using the chairs before choosing the finish. In a busy family kitchen, easy-clean surfaces, wipeable seats or darker colours can be much more forgiving.

“Very pale fabrics can look beautiful, but they are not always the most practical choice for young children, pets or everyday dining.

“That does not mean you have to choose something boring. It means picking a chair that suits the way your home works, so you are not constantly worrying about every spill or mark.”

5. Ignoring the floor

Dining chairs are moved constantly, and the wrong feet can scratch flooring, drag noisily or make the whole dining area feel messy.

This is especially common in open-plan kitchen-diners, where the floor is often one continuous surface and every scrape shows.

Spencer said: “People often forget that dining chairs and flooring have to work together. A chair that is dragged in and out several times a day can quickly damage softer floors if the feet are rough or unprotected.

“Felt pads are a cheap and simple fix, but they make a big difference. They help protect the floor, reduce noise and make the chairs easier to move.

“It is also worth checking the chair legs themselves. Wide, stable legs can be better for some floors, while very narrow legs can leave marks more easily if they are not protected.”

Spencer added: “The best dining chairs are the ones you barely have to think about once they are in place. They fit the table, suit the room, feel comfortable and cope with everyday life.

“If you get those basics right, the whole dining area feels calmer, easier and much more inviting.”
