Designing a Family Living Room

Designing a family living room is really about finding the balance between practical everyday living and a space that still feels warm, relaxed and pulled together. Kate Palmer, Creative Director at The Painted Furniture Company shares her advice.

The best place to start is by thinking in gentle “zones” rather than rigid layouts. Most family rooms naturally end up with a cosy seating and TV area, a quieter corner for reading or winding down, and a good amount of storage to keep everyday life feeling under control.

Storage pieces like dressers and sideboards are absolute heroes in a busy home. They’re perfect for tucking away all the bits and bobs that seem to multiply in family life such as board games, children’s toys, spare blankets, chargers, all of it. Placed neatly against a wall or in an unused nook, they help keep the centre of the room feeling open and easy to live in. And of course, their tops are a lovely opportunity to add a lamp, a vase of flowers, or a few treasured pieces that make the space feel more personal.

Bookcases are another wonderful addition, especially in a family living room where flexibility is key. Yes, they’re brilliant for books, but they can also hold photos, keepsakes and those little decorative touches that make a house feel like home. If you’re keen to keep things looking calm rather than cluttered, try mixing in baskets or storage boxes on the shelves, which are perfect for hiding away the less pretty essentials while still keeping everything close at hand.

When it comes to arranging your furniture, a little balance goes a long way. It doesn’t need to be overly formal, but it’s worth making sure one side of the room doesn’t feel heavier than the other. So, if you’ve got a large bookcase or shelving unit, you might find it works beautifully to echo that weight with a sideboard or media unit on the opposite side.

Just as important is making sure the room feels easy to move around in. Family living rooms work hard, so pathways between sofas, storage and focal points should feel natural and unblocked. It’s often tempting to squeeze in “just one more piece”, but leaving a bit of breathing space will make the room far more enjoyable day to day.

A well-chosen TV or media unit also makes a big difference in keeping things tidy and functional. Look for something that feels in proportion to your room and offers plenty of hidden storage for all those essential gadgets. And if you can, think about cable management from the start, as hiding away wires instantly gives a calmer, more pulled-together feel.
