How Thermal Curtains Are Becoming Summer's Must-Have Window Dressing

Blackout curtains don't have to dominate a room. Choosing lighter shades such as soft neutrals, warm whites or gentle natural tones will help to keep the space feeling bright, even when the curtains are closed. Natural looking fabrics and subtle textures also work beautifully in country homes, adding softness rather than heaviness.

Layering is one of the easiest ways to balance practicality with a relaxed country look. A sheer linen or linen-look curtain will allow soft daylight to filter through whilst still maintaining privacy, creating that airy feel we all love during summer.

Pairing this with a separate blackout or thermal-lined curtain will then give you flexibility throughout the day. You can keep the sheer layer drawn for a light, breezy look, then close the blackout curtain during the hottest part of the afternoon to reduce heat gain. The layered effect also adds interest and texture, making windows feel beautifully dressed without appearing too formal.

The timing is just as important as the curtain itself. As a general rule, keep curtains closed on windows receiving direct sunlight, particularly from late morning through to the afternoon when the sun is at its strongest. Once the sun has moved away from that side of the house, open the curtains again to bring daylight back into the room.

In the evening, when outdoor temperatures begin to drop, open both the curtains and the windows, to let the breeze circulate. Following the sun around the home throughout the day is one of the simplest ways to naturally manage indoor temperatures.

Many older cottages weren't built with modern insulation in mind, and features such as single glazing, deep window reveals and uneven window shapes all make it harder to keep rooms comfortable during hot weather. Thermal curtains offer a practical solution without altering the character of the property.

By creating an additional barrier between the window and the room, they help reduce the amount of solar heat entering the home while still preserving the original features. They're also straightforward to install, making them an accessible option for homeowners who want to improve comfort without undertaking major renovation work. Better still, the same curtains can help retain warmth during winter, making them a worthwhile investment throughout the year.
