Brown Interiors Boom

Mittsu Japanese Tiles’ Kaji Border in Burnt Russet

The New Neutral: Mittsu Japanese Tiles on Why Brown Returns to the Interiors Spotlight

Brown is firmly back on the interiors agenda, says Japanese tile specialist Mittsu.

Analysis of Pinterest Trends data reveals interest in brown interiors has surged over the past 12 months, as homeowners increasingly turn to warmer, earthier colour palettes.

Over the last year, searches for ‘brown living room aesthetic’ and ‘brown bedroom décor’ have both risen by 200 per cent, while searches for ‘brown bathroom’ are up 70 per cent*.

Now, the experts at Mittsu are showing how brown tiles can bring this emerging trend into kitchens, bathrooms and living spaces, adding depth and timeless character to walls.

Ian Reynolds, Founder of Mittsu, said: “Brown has an incredibly grounding effect in the home. It brings a sense of comfort, helping rooms feel more inviting and cocooning without becoming overpowering. Its growing popularity also reflects a wider move towards natural, earthy interiors and colours that feel timeless rather than trend-led.”

Mittsu’s range of authentic brown-hued Japanese tiles are not defined by printed patterns. Instead their colour, texture and surface character are created naturally during firing in the kiln, which means each tile carries small differences in tone and glaze movement.

When installed across a wall or surface, these variations create a natural composition of colour and texture rather than a repeating printed design.

Ian added: “Japanese tiles take the look to another level because they bring craftsmanship into the scheme. Their nuanced glazes and beautifully imperfect finishes allow light to move across the surface, revealing different tones throughout the day. This gives brown far more dimension, turning what could be a simple neutral into a rich and characterful design feature.”

Mittsu’s range of brown Japanese tiles are available now, with prices starting at £138.89 per m2.
