Bespoke Wine Cellar

Most brick slip projects focus on a feature wall. This remarkable wine cellar took things a step further, using brick slips across the walls, vaulted ceiling and floor to create a completely immersive space.

Designed to recreate the feel of a traditional underground wine cellar, this project showcases just how versatile brick slips can be when used creatively. Expertly installed by James at JP Tiling, the finished space combines authentic character with modern craftsmanship and practicality.

Why Choose Brick Slips for a Wine Cellar?

The client wanted to recreate the look of a traditional underground wine cellar while avoiding the weight, structural requirements and installation challenges associated with full reclaimed bricks.

Brick slips offered the perfect solution, providing the appearance of aged brickwork while allowing greater flexibility throughout the build. By using brick slips across multiple surfaces, the project achieved the character and charm of a historic cellar without compromising on practicality.

Using brick slips across the walls, ceiling and floor helped create the impression of a traditional underground cellar. Once the oak cabinetry and lighting were installed, the space came together exactly as the client had envisioned.

Selecting the Right Brick Slip Blends

Choosing the right brick slips was crucial to achieving the desired aesthetic.

Blend 12 is a weathered red brick slip featuring warm orange tones and distinctive dark brown statement bricks. It perfectly captures the look of traditional reclaimed brickwork, bringing depth, texture and character to the walls and vaulted ceiling.

For the floor, Blend 10 slips were selected to complement the varied tones found in Blend 12 while maintaining the authentic character of the cellar. The subtle colour variation within the blend helps create a seamless transition between the floor, walls and vaulted ceiling, bringing the entire design together.

White mortar was used throughout the project to define each brick slip and highlight the intricate detailing within both the vaulted ceiling and herringbone floor. The lighter mortar colour enhances the texture of the brick slips while working beautifully alongside the warm oak cabinetry and soft LED lighting.

Herringbone Brick Slip Flooring

The brick slips weren't confined to the walls and ceiling, our Blend 10 slips were chosen and laid in a classic herringbone pattern. Featuring cream brick slips with white and dark grey colour variation in a tumbled and textured finish, Blend 10 is a real favourite amongst our customers. Its light, characterful appearance complements the varied tones found in Blend 12, helping to create a seamless transition between the floor, walls and vaulted ceiling while adding warmth and visual interest to the space.

The herringbone pattern introduces another layer of craftsmanship to the project and provides a natural contrast to the curved brick ceiling above. Together, these elements create a balanced design that draws the eye throughout the cellar and reinforces the authentic feel of the finished space.

Challenges of the Project

While the finished result looks effortless, this was one of the more technically demanding brick slip installations. One of the standout elements is the vaulted brick slip ceiling, which required careful planning throughout the installation. Maintaining consistent joint widths across the curved ceiling, while ensuring the brick bond remained natural, required a high level of precision and attention to detail.

The herringbone floor layout also had to be accurately set out to ensure it aligned neatly with the bespoke oak cabinetry. The combination of curved and flat surfaces meant every stage of the installation needed to be carefully considered, with each cut planned to maintain a seamless flow throughout the cellar. The result is a beautifully finished space where the brick slips look completely at home from every angle.

The Finished Result

Both the installer and client were delighted with the completed project.

"The combination of the brick slips, oak joinery and lighting created exactly the atmosphere the client was hoping for. The finished cellar feels as though it has always been part of the property."

The combination of Blend 12 and Blend 10 brick slips, bespoke oak cabinetry and warm integrated lighting has created a truly exceptional wine cellar. The space feels authentic, welcoming and full of character, while maintaining the premium finish expected within a luxury home.

This project showcases how brick slips can be used far beyond feature walls. From vaulted ceilings to herringbone flooring, brick slips offer endless design possibilities and can be used to create spectacular spaces with genuine architectural character.
