8 Expert Ways to Boost Radiator Performance this Winter

As temperatures drop, turning up the thermostat might seem like the obvious fix to a chilly home. However, if your radiators aren't performing properly, increasing the temperature could be masking the problem rather than solving it. Nick Duggan, Managing Director at The Radiator Centre, shares the tell-tale signs that your radiators aren't working as efficiently as they should and what you can do about it.

"When a room feels cold, most people instinctively reach for the thermostat, but it's worth looking at the radiator first. A radiator that isn't heating evenly, has cold spots or takes a long time to warm up could be telling you that something isn't quite right. In some cases, the solution is incredibly simple, while in others it can indicate an issue with the wider heating system," explains Nick.

1. Cold at the top? It could need bleeding.

If your radiator is cold at the top but warm at the bottom, there’s a good chance air has become trapped inside. Bleeding it is a simple job that can help get things back to normal. Turn the heating off and let the radiator cool, then use a radiator key to gently open the bleed valve at the top. You should hear the trapped air escaping. Once water starts to come through steadily, close the valve again. It’s also worth checking your boiler pressure afterwards, as bleeding a radiator can cause it to drop.

2. Cold at the bottom? Don't assume it's the same problem.

If your radiator is hot at the top but stays cold at the bottom, it could be a sign that sludge or debris has built up inside and is stopping the water from circulating properly. Unlike trapped air, bleeding the radiator won't solve this one. It may need flushing to remove the build-up or, in more stubborn cases, a power flush of the wider heating system, so it's worth getting a heating professional to take a look if the problem persists.

3. Some radiators hot, others lukewarm? Your system could need balancing

If some radiators heat up much faster than others, it could be a sign that the hot water isn't being distributed evenly around your heating system. Balancing the radiators can help to get things flowing more evenly. This involves adjusting the lockshield valves on individual radiators to control the amount of hot water flowing through each one, helping to make sure heat is distributed more evenly around your home.

4. Radiator not heating properly? Check the valves first

A stuck TRV is a really common problem, particularly after the heating hasn't been used over the summer. Try removing the valve head and gently pressing the small metal pin underneath, it should move freely up and down. If it feels stuck, gently working it can help to free it, but don't force it. Once it's moving freely again, replace the valve head and turn the heating back on. In many cases, this simple fix is usually enough to do the trick and once it’s moving freely, your radiator should spring back to life.

5. Radiator hidden behind furniture? Give your heat room to circulate.

Furniture, curtains and radiator covers can all get in the way of the warm air coming from your radiator. Try to keep the area around your radiator as clear as possible, particularly directly above it, so the heat can circulate around the room. If you have full-length curtains, make sure they aren't hanging over the radiator when the heating is on, as this can trap the warm air behind them.

6. Radiator is hot but the room is cold? It could be the wrong size.

If your radiator is getting nice and hot but the room still feels chilly, it could simply be too small for the space. Radiators need to be sized according to the amount of heat the room loses, taking things like its size, windows, insulation and external walls into account. If you're replacing a radiator, always check the required heat output rather than simply choosing one that fits the space.

7. Changed your heating system? Your radiators may need an upgrade too.

If you've changed from a boiler to a heat pump, don't forget about your radiators. Heat pumps generally work at lower flow temperatures than traditional boilers, so your existing radiators may not be able to provide enough heat to warm the room properly. It's always worth checking that your radiators are suitable for your new heating system and have the right heat output for the room. In some cases, larger or specially designed low-temperature radiators may be needed to make sure your home stays warm and your new system works as efficiently as possible.

8. Still struggling to heat the room? It could be time to replace the radiator.

If you've checked the basics and your radiator is still struggling to heat the room, it could simply be reaching the end of its useful life. There's no set lifespan for a radiator, so age alone isn't necessarily a reason to replace it, but corrosion, damage or ongoing problems with sludge can all affect how well it performs. If you've tried the usual fixes and it's still not doing the job, it may be time to consider replacing it rather than continuing to battle with an underperforming radiator.

Finally – don't forget about heat loss

Even the best-performing radiators will struggle to keep a room warm if you're losing heat faster than you can replace it. Simple things like draught-proofing around doors and windows, closing curtains at dusk and making sure your loft insulation is up to scratch can all help to keep the warmth in. If you have an open fireplace, it's also worth looking at ways to stop heat escaping up the chimney. The less heat your home loses, the less work your heating system needs to do to keep it warm, which can help keep energy use and running costs down.
