Frida Kahlo
Frida Kahlo, the Mexican artist who had only one solo exhibition in her short lifetime, is today celebrated for her vibrant, passionate self portraits and her feminist ideas. Her personal and intense artwork explores her extreme pain following a teenage bus accident, her profound depression and her fierce relationship with husband Diego Rivera, who she was married to twice before her untimely death at age 47.
A Mexican icon, known for her bold use of colour and celebration of Mexican culture, Kahlo’s legacy lives on in the distinct style of her work. Portraits often depict her thick eyebrows and moustache, just as she did. It is no wonder that her style and, indeed, her face are honoured in prints, embroidery, soft furnishings and even ceramics as her fantastic contribution to the art world is remembered.
With annual Mexican holiday Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead) approaching on 2nd November, we are seeing depictions of Kahlo in a more traditional style with inclusions of ‘Sugar Skull’ themes and more native Mexican imagery.
Here we have collected the best Frida Kahlo finds, from cushions and home accessories to drinkware and prints.
