Hi Andaluz,ʉϬ

BORIS BANDYOPADHYAY interior is excited to reveal the latest edition of Andaluz, a new stool and sidetable as cultural statement to inspire the question:

Andaluz - a meeting of design, culture and craftsmanship

The Andaluz stool and side table is not only a versatile piece of furniture for modern living environments, but also tells a story that crosses cultural boundaries and raises the question: What connects two cultures? Andaluz combines architectural elements of the East with cultural symbols of the West.

Andaluz' culturally inspired design, in the form of a stool and multifunctional side table, creates a bridge between people, cultures and ways of life that have influenced each other over the centuries. Al-Andalus is the name of a territory on the Iberian peninsula where Christians, Jews and Muslims lived together until the 15th century.

Andaluz goes well with minimalist, natural furnishing styles with Scandinavian, Japanese or Far Eastern influences.

What connects cultures from a design perspective?

Sustainability here refers not only to durable materials, local production and long-lasting design, but also to the social aspect in the sense of an awareness of different cultural influences in one's own culture.

The minimalist Andaluz stool and side table is an exclusive edition, each object is handmade and is characterised by its unmistakable arched shape. This so-called pointed arch shape runs through at least 2000 years of architectural history, reliefs with it can already be found during the Indian Buddhist era, perhaps it goes back to the lotus leaf in Buddhism.

Statically, it is also superior to the Roman semicircular arch form and can bear up to a third more load. Arab-Islamic architecture adopts the ogee arch for niches and portals, while Gothic architecture, which aspires to the heavens, develops the characteristic Gothic window shape from it.

Handcrafted in the Black Forest, in the Rhine-Main region and in Sicily. Made from solid oak or silver fir in the Black Forest, Andaluz combines eastern and western design traditions. The collection is complemented by variants made of Calacatta Viola marble and high-performance concrete from regional materials (Rhine-Main area), which give the object new functions (outdoor/bathroom), additional variety and uniqueness.

What makes Andaluz special?

-> Versatility: Very flexible to use as a stool, coffee table, side table or bedside table. The lighter wooden versions can be quickly added when additional storage space is needed. The concrete version can also be used outdoors or in the shower

-> Uniqueness: Each table top is handmade from natural materials such as oak and marble. Their unique character is created by the natural wildness, individual grain patterns and the random play of colours in the stone.

-> Inspiration: The curved arch shape is inspired by Buddhist, Islamic and Christian architecture and was specially designed for interiors in which objects with different cultural influences can create a unifying atmosphere.

About BORIS BANDYOPADHYAY interior

Boris Indra Bandyopadhyay founded the BANDYOPADHYAY interior studio in 2015.
From his question of what links cultures out of a design perspective, he created the ‘Andaluz’ as a design object and cultural statement. His work appears regularly in design magazines and newspapers, and he researches and speaks on the topics of spaces as places of personal development, interior design as inspiration and design as a cultural statement. He lives in Frankfurt and Berlin.

A graduate of the Cologne International School of Design (KISD) and the Humboldt University of Berlin, he combines design and culture in surprising interior solutions. His award-winning ideas, including an innovative furniture system for internet configuration, reflect his unconventional, humorous approach. With the start-up alvari (www.alvari.de), he launched modular solid wood furniture that can be configured online and is also used in his interior projects.

His studio BANDYOPADHYAY interior (www.bandyopadhyay.de) works in the residential, office and hospitality sectors - with a focus on innovative, healthy and above all, inspiring colour, material and surface concepts as well as lighting objects as architectural signature pieces.

“As a German-Indian designer, I am particularly interested in bringing together different cultures, design approaches and elements.“

Boris Bandyopadhyay, Frankfurt/Berlin, June 2025
