Traditionally in China, large cabinets or armoires like this were presented as part of a bride's wedding dowry, although the term 'Wedding Cabinet' is a more recent western term. The contents of the cabinet - fabrics, clothes and silks, also formed part of the dowry. The cabinets were usually in either red or black lacquer and, as in our reproduction versions, they were often decorated with large, circular brass plates on the doors.
