Description
This beautiful red lacquer wedding cabinet is made from solid elm wood. Traditionally in China, large cabinets or armoires like this were presented as part of a bride's wedding dowry, although the term 'Wedding Cabinet' is a more recent western term. The contents of the cabinet - fabrics, clothes and silks, also formed part of the dowry. The cabinets were usually in either red or black lacquer and, as in our reproduction versions, they were often decorated with large, circular brass plates on the doors. The plates on these ones are etched with Chinese figures and with the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac. The cabinets include a wooden hanging rail inside as well as three removable shelves. They can therefore be used as an oriental style wardrobe or for general storage. Two small drawers at the bottom provide additional storage space.
