Description
Qingha, circa 1880
This stunning cabinet, with an open shelf unit in the top section, is from Qinghai in western China and the bright red cinnabar lacquer and decorative paintings are typical of that region. Once used to hold books and to show favoured ornaments, it would be at home today as a large bookshelf or display unit. It is in a highly original conition, with the old colour, carving and paintings all intact. Often cabinets like this are cut down to form lower sideboards but this one is in it's old proportions. The intricate carvings around the shelf are in a floral pattern, matching the paitings of flower vases on the lower section. As was common for Qinghai furniture, the small doors are set centrally, but give access to the full lower space inside.
