Dongbei, circa 1900

This beautiful antique sideboard is finished in a rich red lacquer, its front panels finely decorated with gilt floral motifs and auspicious symbols in a style that is distinctive of furniture from China's northeast (Dongbei) provinces. The piece dates from the late Qing period and would originally have been used in a domestic reception room to store clothing, valuables or ceremonial objects, doubling as an altar table to display ancestor offerings. Red was considered an auspicious colour associated with joy, celebration and prosperity, and furniture finished in such a vibrant tone was often commissioned for weddings and other special occasions or for prominent display within the home.

The front of the sideboard is beautifully decorated with hand-painted floral motifs and auspicious symbols, including 'eternal knots' to represent long life and 'double happiness' characters. Pomegranates carry a traditional meaning of fertility and a wish for a fruitful marriage, while butterflies are included to indicate long life and marital happiness. Each of these motifs is framed in gold to create a geometric pattern that is particular to the Dongbei region. At the centre, the brass lock plate is in a golden tone that complements the surrounding painted detailed. The inscription above the lock plate is a message for good luck, loosely translating as "wishing you success and good fortune in all things". Along with the heavy symbolism in the paintings, this suggests that the sideboard may originally have been commissioned as a gift for a newly married couple.

With its generous storage space and striking colour, the sideboard would work beautifully today in a living room, dining room or hallway. It includes a removable shelf on the inside and the central post between the doors can also be removed for easier access. One of the most attractive pieces we have come across in a traditional Dongbei style, the cabinet provides practical everyday use while bringing a bold splash of colour and antique Chinese charm to any interior.
