Shanxi, circa 1860

This wonderful sideboard originates from Shanxi province, a region long celebrated for its richly painted and beautifully textured furniture. Dating from the mid nineteenth century, the cabinet retains its original, time-worn charm, with a distinctive distressed finish in duck egg blue that has softened over more than a century of use.

The piece is constructed from elm, with its once bright layers of lacquer naturally worn back over time, revealing the warm timber beneath and creating a beautifully crackled, mottled patina. The result is a cabinet that feels authentically aged with a more muted version of its original colouring.

Across the front are three drawers set above double doors, each fitted with old metal ring pulls. A single smaller drawer is set at each side. The larger central doors retain their original shaped lock plate and pin, a lovely detail that adds further character and speaks to the cabinet’s long working life. Straight, substantial legs and broad proportions give the piece a solid, grounded presence.

Originally used for general household storage in a rural Shanxi home, this sideboard offers equally versatile use today. Its generous surface makes it ideal as a console in a hallway or dining room, while the drawers and cupboard space offer practical storage for linens, tableware or everyday essentials. Its weathered tones and tactile finish would bring warmth and individuality to both contemporary and traditional interiors.

A striking example of provincial Chinese furniture, full of history and character, and a wonderful statement piece for any home.
