Description
DeepL TranslateShanxi, circa 1850
This distinctive table is of a type that was used in China for centuries for serving food and drink, but also as a more general display surface. The thick table top extends over rounded, recessed legs that are supported with long single stretchers to the front and back and double stretchers at the sides. Below the table surface and at the top of the legs is a simple, moulded apron and spandrels, which still show large traces of the original dark lacquer finish. On the table top and legs the finish has mostly worn away, showing the natural colour and attractive, wide grain of the elm wood. The table is a perfect example of the ingenuity of tradition Chinese carpentry, with the legs, stretchers, apron and table top all fitted together with mortise and tenons that do away with the need for nails. Great as a display console today to bring warmth and character to any space.
