Description
DeepL TranslateShanxi, circa 1960
These old buckets are from Shanxi province, each adorned with a single character on the front. The buckets are in their original shape and finish, now worn to a lovely patina. The shaped handles are typical of Shanxi design. The character on the bucket shown here to the left is “公” (gōng), meaning public or communal. The character on the bucket shown to the right is 私 (sī), meaning private or individual. This might have been an indication of their use but more likely had a moral significance, serving as a reminder of the importance of communal values and to respect others' private possessions.
Sold separately or as a pair, the price shown is for each bucket. Great for logs, kindling wood, toys or magazines.
