09 April 2026: When it comes to refreshing a home, big transformations don’t have to mean big renovations. In 2026, homeowners are turning to wallpaper as a high impact way to completely change the look and feel of a space. With pattern-centred trends such as the light and airy Bridgerton-themed "Regencycore” trend and the rising popularity of dark and moody Gothic Romance, wallpapers can provide rich character and interest in any space.

If you're looking to refresh your walls this spring, B&Q's Wallpaper expert Charlotte Payne offers her best advice on using impactful wallpaper to transform your rooms.

Charlotte says "Unlike paint alone, wallpaper brings multiple design elements together in one step. A single roll can introduce colour, pattern and depth, instantly elevating a room and making it feel more considered and styled. Wallpaper has a unique ability to bridge timeless design and current trends, giving homeowners the freedom to create spaces that feel either classically elegant or confidently on trend, depending on their personal style."

Wallpaper is particularly effective in smaller or easily ignored areas, where a full redesign might feel unnecessary. Cloakrooms, hallways, landings, home offices and downstairs toilets are being reimagined, with wallpaper used to add interest and character without overwhelming the space. Using a small area to experiment, can help make future confident design choices, helping customers move beyond 'safe' neutral and create homes that reflect who they are. This can be achieved by using feature wallpaper, colour-drenched walls, or patterned tiles to define a room's style. In larger rooms, wallpaper can be used strategically to zone areas, frame architectural features or add warmth, making even simple layouts feel intentional and inviting."

Charlotte’s tips for maximum transformation

  • Let wallpaper lead: To achieve a truly maximalist look, mix vibrant wallpaper patterns with equally striking furniture pieces for maximum impact. For room design cohesion, you can also pick one colour from the wallpaper design, which can be used in other feature décor items like cushions and rugs. If you want to balance the boldness, consider pairing your eye-catching wallpaper with neutral floors or furnishings.

  • Think beyond living rooms: Bedrooms, hallways and cloakrooms, even the inside of cupboards and larders are perfect for experimenting with wallpaper. You can layer up colour, pattern and texture with wall panelling, paint, wallpaper and playful accessories.

  •  Make it easier with paste the wall application: Many of the latest designs feature paste the wall application, making wallpaper quicker and easier to hang, even for first time decorators. With paste-the-paper method, the paper expands when it's wet, so it needs careful soaking time before hanging. In contrast, paste the wall application uses a special non-woven backing paper that does not expand when wet, meaning customers can save up to a third of the hanging time with this handy technology.

  • Measure your walls: Before buying your wallpaper, it's essential to know how many rolls you’ll need. Use a tape measure to measure the width and height of each wall or surface being decorated and then use our wallpaper calculator to calculate the amount needed.

  • Prep the walls properly before you start: Good preparation is key to an easy wallpapering job. Walls should be clean, dry and as smooth as possible, with any cracks or holes filled and sanded down beforehand. On freshly plastered or very porous walls, applying a mist coat or wall primer helps prevent the paste from soaking in too quickly, giving you more time to position the paper. The smoother the surface, the easier the wallpaper will glide into place and the better the finished result will look.
