Dating from the late nineteenth century, this elegant cabinet originates from Shanxi province in northern China and is finished in a rich, warm red lacquer that has aged beautifully over time. The surface of the doors is subtly decorated with traces of traditional landscape scenes, including pagodas, trees and mountains, now softly worn with age to reveal a wonderful depth of colour and texture. The outer frames and bottom apron are adorned with floral patterns along with bats and butterflies - symbols for good luck and long life. The faded gilt decoration, known as 'miao jin', adds character and charm, giving the piece a quiet, understated beauty that speaks of its long history.
At the centre, a finely shaped brass lock plate provides a simple focal point, typical of cabinetry produced during the late Qing dynasty. The red lacquer finish, once vibrant, has developed a lovely patina through years of use. In Chinese culture, red is an auspicious colour symbolising happiness, vitality and good fortune, particularly when combined with gold. As such the colours were often used on Chinese furniture from Shanxi, especially used for wedding furniture.
