Description

Gansu, circa 1920, the top half of this unusual cabinet, with two doors and still with its original paintings, would once have sat on top of a matching larger cabinet for additional storage, but over time it has been separated from the other section. The lower, black lacquer stand, with two shallow drawers at the top, has been created to provide a base for the cabinet, raising it up to a more practical level that makes it ideal for bedroom storage, for books and games or perhaps as a drinks cabinet.
This style is often referred to today as a book cabinet, though the units were more often used for holding clothes and other personal effects. The paintings are now severely worn in places but some detail can still be made out, showing a domestic scene of pagodas and a red lattice fence picked out in red. The door hardware is new, a replacement for the original.
