Description

Dongbei, circa 1920
This captivating sideboard boasts a vibrant red lacquer finish and striking geometric paintings - features commonly seen on cabinets produced in China's northeast 'Dongbei' region. In addition to providing storage space for valuable or everyday items, these intricately painted sideboards were also used as home altars for honouring ancestors. What sets this particular sideboard apart is its two removable half board panels, an original detail not normally maintained during restoration.
The doors are adorned with elegant paintings of various flora and fauna including lilies, butterflies and fish. The outer frames feature flowers above and below the doors and geometric scrolling patterns picked out in gold. The bold and colourful combination of greens, blues, and golds in the paintings is now faded to softer tones but still contrasts beautifully against the red lacquer background. The sideboard has been updated with four additional doors and a full width shelf, making it a stunning and functional storage piece for any space.
