The aptly named fantail is one of the most common and widely distributed native birds on the New Zealand mainland. TUI are unique to New Zealand. They are energetic, medium-sized, common and widespread. Tui have distinctive white throat tufts (poi) and are very vocal. KERERU or wood pigeon is a large bird with shining green and bronze feathers on its head and a white vest. The noisy beat of its wings is a distinctive sound in NZ forests.
