Description
DeepL Translate‘Doors of the Blue City, Jodhpur, India’ is a vibrant original oil painting by Joanne Short, inspired by the extraordinary blue-painted architecture and intimate streets of Jodhpur in Rajasthan.
Joanne focuses on the character of the buildings themselves: arched doorways, balconies, shutters, steps and windows arranged across a richly patterned façade. The famous blues of Jodhpur are balanced with fresh greens, turquoise, warm orange and coral, while plants spill from balconies, textiles hang overhead and decorative details bring the architecture to life.
The subject of doors has a particularly personal significance for Joanne. As an art student in Italy, she created a major body of work centred on doors in a hilltop village, working directly onto existing doors and embellishing them with her own art as site-specific installations.
For Joanne, doors have always suggested far more than architecture. They can represent possibility, intrigue and potential — gateways between one place and another, between the familiar and the unknown. A closed door conceals another world; an open one invites us through.
That earlier artistic fascination finds a natural continuation in Jodhpur. Here the doors and windows of the Blue City become part of a layered visual journey through India, each one suggesting another courtyard, room, family, story or experience beyond.
The painting was created following Joanne’s journey through India as part of the wider Last Chance to Paint – Land of the Tiger expedition, which she helped to deliver alongside John Dyer. After the expedition work in Pench, Joanne travelled across India, responding in paint to the country’s architecture, culture, colour and extraordinary visual richness.
Rather than presenting Jodhpur as a distant cityscape, Joanne brings us close to its doors, walls and courtyards. In doing so, she connects this Indian painting to ideas that have interested her since the beginning of her career.
Doors of the Blue City therefore becomes both a celebration of Jodhpur and a painting about possibility; the tantalising sense that behind every door another world is waiting to be discovered.
