Description
DeepL TranslateShanxi, circa 1920
This extraordinary table would make a beautiful, unusual coffee table or TV stand today or could be perfect at the end of a bed. It is originally from Shanxi province, where it would have been used on the 'kang' - a raised area heated from below that formed the main living space in a Chinese home during the colder months. The table would have provided storage space inside the drawers and a display or work surface. The exquisite open carvings on the lower panels and apron are in an intricate scrolling pattern with wonderful detail and craftsmanship. The four drawers at the top are similarly carved but in deep relief, and each fitted with a simple ring handle. Originally in a lacquered red finish, the colour has worn to the more natural wood underneath. An unusual, beautiful piece that would grace any space today.
