Shanxi, circa 1880

This Chinese antique cabinet dates to the late nineteenth century and originates from Shanxi province, an area renowned for its finely crafted lacquered furniture. The cabinet is a striking example of late Qing dynasty artistry, combining strong architectural form with richly decorative surface work. Finished in a deep, time-softened black lacquer, the cabinet’s doors are hand-painted with delicate scenes of flowering branches and birds. The colours—muted reds, warm ochres and soft greens—have mellowed beautifully with age, creating a subtle contrast against the dark background. At the centre of the doors sits an original circular metal lock plate with twin drop handles, its gently oxidised surface adding further character.

The paintings show various flowers and birds, each with strong symbolic meanings. The birds include a pheasant or phoenix on the right hand side to represent beauty and good fortune. Coupled with the peony flower the phoenix is said to symbolise the lover and the beloved and so the two are often seen adorning cabinets like this one, that were often included as part of a bride's dowry. On the left hand door three songbirds are perched on blossom branches - a symbol for peace and harmony. The bottom panel of the cabinet is also painted, with details of a flower vase and a tray most likely holding pomegranates as a fertility symbol. The cabinet's outer frames feature stylised dragons and long life symbols, whilst the beautifully shaped bottom apron shows a pair of opposing dragons.

Originally intended for storing household valuables or textiles, the cabinet lends itself effortlessly to contemporary use. Today it would make an elegant statement piece in a living room, dining room or hallway, ideal for storing books, tableware or personal items. Its richly decorated doors also make it suitable as a focal cabinet in a bedroom or study, where it can be appreciated both for its practical storage and its painterly surface.
