Open bookshelves were considered an important item in a Chinese scholar's study or library. Books would be stacked on top of one another with the covers facing up rather than horizontally with the spine facing outwards, so shelves tended to be deeper than their western counterparts. These shelves are made from solid elm wood, with three built-in drawers and two shelves. Both the upper and lower shelves are framed at the front with decorative carving.
