Gansu, circa 1900
This unique armoire has been made from an antique grain storage chest - a low, wide buffet that would have had three sections, each with a fixed panel in the front and accessed through a lid in the top. The chest has been cut down to produce legs from the frame of the third section and the whole piece turned on its side to be used as a tall storage cabinet. The two remaining fixed panels have been cut to produce doors with simple ring handles, and a removable shelf added inside each section. The piece has been given a quite contemporary looking distressed grey finish. An ingenious way to recycle an old piece of furniture, the newly formed cabinet is great for storage in narrow spaces.
