Shanxi, circa 1860
The curved, four post backrests and angular, S shaped top rails on these chairs give them a more contemporary look compared to most chairs of the same period. They are almost deco in appearance even though they predate that style by at least 50 years. The seat panels sit flush with the surrounding frames, which is also quite unusual. Otherwise they show some fairly typical traits of traditional Chinese design, with curved aprons, footrests and double stretchers between the legs. The frames, legs and seat posts are all in elm, the lovely grain showing through the worn dark red finish. The seat panels look to be in a different, paler wood. Sold as a pair, the price shown is for both chairs.
