Shanxi, circa 1880
This lovely console would have been produced as a writing desk, with the decorative lattice shelf at the bottom forming a foot rest. The dark lacquer at the front of this has worn away to a paler colour through use. The random design of the lattice work is known in Chinese as 'cracked ice' and is also commonly seen in dividing panels and screens. There is further open carving at each side below the three drawers, in the form of stylised dragons, whilst the front feet show a square, scroll design - both common in Qing dynasty furniture. An unusual, beautiful table, ideal today as a console in a reception area.
