About

Helen Snell’s fabulous fabric designs have been bought by M&S, River Island, and Debenhams and by iconic US brands Levi’s, Jantzen and Pendleton.

Six years ago, frustrated at the lack of options for mid-century textiles, she made the decision to go it alone and create her own 1950s-inspired designs.

Under her 20th Century Cloth brand she has launched a unique range of fabrics, first for fashion and then for furnishings along with matching homeware products, including lampshades, cushions and melamine.

Helen uses traditional 1950s techniques – mark making by hand – to create her designs. And all 20th Century Cloth products are manufactured in the UK.

20th Century Cloth introduces Mid Century Wallpaper collection

Retro homeware brand 20th Century Cloth has unveiled its debut wallpaper range.

The Mid Century-inspired designs are a first for the independent retailer, which already has an established collection of interior accessories and soft furnishings.

The eight-strong collection features classic 50s and 60s stylings inspired by the Space Race and Americana.

Helen Snell, founder and creative director of 20th Century Cloth, said: “Expanding my homeware collection to include wallpapers has always been a long-term goal and to see my designs adorning walls across entire rooms is a real career highlight.

“My designs have always been unapologetically bold and colourful and they are designed to bring spaces to life.

“These really are the perfect way to inject some Mid Century vibes throughout the home.”

Like all of Helen's designs, her wallpapers started life as monochrome hand-drawings before being digitalised and colour added.

Helen said: "I am obsessed with pattern and my creative process starts with black and white mark making using really traditional techniques. Combining these old-school practices with modern printing techniques has helped my realise my dream of launching my own wallpaper collection."

20th Century’s Cloth’s wallpapers are printed with water-based inks onto eco-friendly paper. They come with a 10-year guarantee for colour fastness when kept out of direct sunlight.

All wallpapers are printed to order and priced at £144 per roll. They are available now from 20thcenturycloth.com

INTERIOR TRENDS: Mix and match your decades

Thought pick n mix disappeared with Woolworths?

Not according to the founder of a retro design house specialising in mid-century styling.

Helen Snell, the founder and creative director of 20th Century Cloth believes a mix and match approach to décor is going to be one of the big trends of summer 2022.

She said: “A lot of homeowners are getting bolder in their approach to interior design. Forget neutrals - from vibrant patterns and darker hues, schemes that make a statement are fast becoming the norm.

“We are now seeing this develop further, with homeowners mixing and matching looks and accessories from different decades and design styles.”

In the kitchen, contemporary cabinetry can be combined with mid-century accessories to add definition and interest. 20th Century Cloth’s eight-strong collection of mid-century inspired tea towels are the perfect vintage-looking foil to modern schemes.

The eight-strong range brings together beautiful pastels, bold patterns and iconic references to the 50s and 60s.

The key, says Helen – who is a textile designer by trade - is to find different looks that complement not confuse.

She said: “Choose accessories that enhance your room’s best features. A vintage nod in a contemporary space will add interest and authenticity, and ramping up the style credentials.”

Tea towels are available from 20thcenturycloth.com and are priced at £12 each.
