About

Helen Snell’s fabulous fabric designs have been bought by M&S, River Island, and Debenhams and by iconic US brands Levi’s, Jantzen and Pendleton.

Six years ago, frustrated at the lack of options for mid-century textiles, she made the decision to go it alone and create her own 1950s-inspired designs.

Under her 20th Century Cloth brand she has launched a unique range of fabrics, first for fashion and then for furnishings along with matching homeware products, including lampshades, cushions and melamine.

Helen uses traditional 1950s techniques – mark making by hand – to create her designs. And all 20th Century Cloth products are manufactured in the UK.

Trends 2022: Interest in Mid-Century styling soars

2021 saw the popularity of Mid-Century design in the UK reach an all-time high. And according to the experts at retro design house 20th Century Cloth, it’s a trend that looks set to continue into 2022.

Searches for ‘midcentury’ within the Home & Garden category of Google Trends peaked in 2021 as homeowners sought to revamp their homes with the cool stylings first made popular in the 50s and 60s.

Characterised by clean lines and fuss-free design where function ruled and form followed, not to mention the bold use of colour and pattern, Mid-Century is distinctive movement that has always demanded attention.

Helen Snell, the founder of retro homeware brand 20th Century Cloth, said: “Mid-Century has an enduring appeal.

“There is a real familiarity to the Mid-Century movement and following all the turmoil of 2020, I think this year people have been yearning to surround themselves with furnishings that not only tick all the boxes when it comes to style but bring a level of reassurance and comfort.”

Helen, who uses traditional techniques when it comes to creating her Mid-Century inspired designs, believes it’s a trend that is going to stick around well into 2022.

“There is something very simplistic about Mid-Century styling and I think people want a bit of simplicity in their lives. Our homes have become our sanctuaries, our safe places, and people want to create a home where they can truly relax and unwind.”

Here, Helen picks out her favourite Mid-Century inspired pieces from her own collection.

“Mid-Century has always been my go-to style,” said Helen. “It continually inspires me in my own designs, which beautifully bring together the styling of the 50s with the best of modern British manufacturing.”
