Create An Indoor Jungle With The Kew x Sproutl Palm House Collection
The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew and Sproutl have unveiled their first co-curated plant collab, the "Palm House Collection''.
The new range brings together seven spectacular tropical plants inspired by Kew's iconic Palm House, bringing a little piece of the Palm House directly to people's doors for the first time. The collection consists of seven stunning, hard-to-find architectural statement plants that range from 45cm to over 165cm in height, with leaf spans of up to three metres.
Prices start from £80 for the ultra-rare Philodendron White Knight to £295 for the stunning dark leafed Elephant's Ear.
The collection's launch coincides with a new appetite in the UK for large statement plants, with searches for them on Sproutl increasing by over 120% in the last three months.
The range of hardy, easy-care tropical plants includes:
Banana Tree - Musa Acuminata' Dwarf Cavendish' £250
As found in the Palm House, Height: 160 cm, estimated leaf span: 1.5cm
The 'Cavendish' banana was first brought to the UK in the 1800s. Though they grow up to 3m in the Palm House, Sproutl has sourced a beautiful 'dwarf' variety to fit in any home. The Dwarf Cavendish's paddle-shaped, attention-grabbing leaves will continue to grow and grow, adding a beautiful splash of bright architectural greenery to any indoor space. Sadly, it won't give you any bananas unless you heat your house to tropical temperatures. Technically the banana tree is a herb. Though bananas are indeed fruits (carrying the seed of the plant), the banana tree is, in fact, a distant relation to ginger, with a succulent tree stem, instead of a wood one.
Elephant's Ear - Alocasia' Regal Shields' £295
Height: 120cm, estimated leaf span: 100cm. The architectural Alocasia is native to Eastern Australia and Asia, instantly recognisable for its enormous heart-shaped leaves, with eye-catching lighter green veins running through them. Sproutl has sourced the 'Regal Shields' for its almost black leaves and unusual matte/velvet texture. Growing in the tropical rainforests of South-East Asia for 28,000 years, domestic versions of Alocasia exploded in popularity in the 1950s. Alocasia is 'the tree that grows up to the heavens, and is said to be the plant in all the Western and Eastern versions of the fairytale of Jack and the Beanstalk.
Fiddle Leaf Fig Tree - Ficus lyrata £275
As found in Palm house Height: 140cm. The corner-of-a-room saviour - the tall, slim Fiddle leaf fig tree is an Instagram classic, perfect for any narrower space while adding vertical drama, a top choice for high-impact, low-maintenance foliage. The Fiddle Leaf are native to western Africa, from Cameroon to Sierra Leone, where they grow in lowland tropical rainforests. Rich, green leaves are large, glossy and distinctively veined, while plants are known to purify the air of toxins. The fiddle leaf fig earned its name because of its leaves - shaped like a violin, or 'fiddle'.
Pygmy Date Palm - Phoenix roebelenii £195
Height: 140cm, Estimated plant span: 3m. The chic, classic, timeless palm. The Edwardians loved it. The Victorians loved it. And we love it too. Coming straight from the Palm House, our Phoenix Roebelenii, or Pygmy Date Palm, will bring an instant look of the tropics to any contemporary living space. This South-East Asian palm has a slim trunk, supporting an arching headdress of lush feathery foliage; the perfect centrepiece to your houseplant collection. Even better, it's easygoing and fuss-free too. In ancient Mesopotamia and ancient Egypt, palms represented fertility and long life.
Giant White Bird of Paradise - Strelitzia Nicolai £215
Height: 165cm If you're after the jungle look, the Bird of Paradise is one of the most tropical-looking plants you can find. Famed for its large paddle-shaped leaves that fan out dramatically from the base, the Strelitzia is most commonly known as the white bird of paradise - named for the exotic, feathery flowers that bloom on mature plants in the wild. Its natural home is Zimbabwe, Botswana and Mozambique, so this is one to grow indoors in the UK. In the wild, it can grow to 6m, but indoors it's more likely to reach about 3m. This species is more commonly found in the forests of South Africa, where its size gives it a competitive advantage for sunlight. Famous floral artist, Georgia O'Keeffe, painted White Bird of Paradise during her time spent in Hawaii in the 1940s, and it is one of her most famous paintings from that time.
Homalomena Maggy - Homalomena rubescens ‘Maggy’ Price £150,
The Homalomena is a favourite for interior designers and stylists worldwide, thanks to its ability to tolerate low light and ease of care. As found in the Palm House, Height: 140cm, Plant span: 1m. Aptly known as Queen of Hearts, or 'Shield Plant' with big, heart-shaped leaves growing from deep red stems. Slow-growing and easy to care for, the long stems of the Maggy give rise to a thick canopy of deep-green, glossy, waxy foliage. While plants thrive in low light levels, they'll tolerate a bright, warm room out of direct sunlight. Although originally from Southern Asia, 'Maggy' will be just as much at home in a humid area like a bathroom or kitchen.
Philodendron 'White Knight' - Philodendron Erubescens £80
Height: 45cm. This super-rare, easy to grow desktop Philodendron - is a tiny slice of the palm house for even the smallest space. This variegated philodendron has a unique white stripe across its leaves - each plant is unique. Leaf stratification becomes more pronounced if exposed to bright light. Though the philodendrons in Kew's Palm House can reach up to 6m, our trailing variety arrives at a desk-friendly 45cm.
