Welcome to the Astro Lighting Press Office
Astro creates lighting that is contemporary yet timeless, believing that every design should be made to last. It has been our ethos from the very beginning. Since 1997, our Founders John Fearon and James Bassant, have shared a commitment to British lighting with the joint design philosophy that good design demands simplicity. This approach underpins all we do; we create mindfully, design thoughtfully, and ensure every Astro luminaire sits confidently within any interior.
Futureproofed by design, timeless, pared-down aesthetics are what we are known for and our luminaires can be seen within design projects across the globe. Using only the finest materials and techniques, our in-house creative team has an instinctive understanding of the Astro way, balancing high-performance with our commitment to sustainable design so every product is created to stand the test of time.
Astro Lighting exclusively for John Lewis
British lighting designer Astro launch an exclusive collection with high street retailer John Lewis & Partners
A shared vision Astro’s new lighting collection, available online exclusively at John Lewis & Partners, encapsulates the core Astro DNA in four timeless pieces designed in Britain.
Painstakingly crafted, each luminaire has a gentle and timeless elegance, with functionality and longevity at its core. Designed in house and overseen by Design Director and Cofounder James Bassant, the distinctive range consists of Conic, Veo, Elena and Millie. Each piece is crafted from the best possible materials and techniques including mouth-blown glass, die-cast metal and sleek polished chrome, elements that are signature to achieving the high-quality and distinctive Astro aesthetic.
Joining the already established portfolio of Astro products available at John Lewis, this new and exclusive collaboration reflects the brands shared vision and commitment to quality, sustainable, British design.
Consistent with Astro’s refined and pared-down aesthetic that sits confidently within any interior, the collection focuses on bathroom and interior wall lights, a typology that Astro has made its own by skilfully balancing an atmospheric glow with comfortable, glare-free task lighting.
The timelessly elegant Conic bathroom wall light is reminiscent of Art Deco design and is characterised by intersecting geometric forms. Its pristine and crisp shape is suited to being used in pairs on either side of a mirror, where it lends a sense of symmetry. The Conic provides functional illumination, washing diffused light downwards over a wall while retaining a relaxing and ambient glow. Making it ideal for everyday bathroom tasks, it elevates the mood in a guest bathroom or powder room, but also looks just as effective along a corridor or hallway. Both its materials and finish enhance the refined look; the body is made from robust die-cast metal, finished in polished chrome or matt black, contrasting beautifully with the delicate white blown-glass shade. A single discreet fixing maintains a seamless look. This light has an IP44 rating for bathroom use, meaning that it’s splash-proof and safe for installation in wet zones.
The Millie and Elena bathroom wall lights are contemporary yet understated. Both feature the same distinctive arm, shaped like a droplet of water or liquid metal suspended in mid-air. This arm is die-cast in aluminium to produce a crisp, seamless form. With its organic curves and subtle geometry, it has a restrained yet characterful look. The Millie is paired with a conical shade in mouthblown opal glass that provides functional, shadowfree illumination while diffusing a soft glow. The Elena, meanwhile, has a cylindrical shade in clear glass for a brighter, more translucent feel. Millie and Elena are IP44 rated, making them splash-proof for use in bathrooms, and are perfect for illuminating everyday tasks such as shaving or applying make-up, especially when used in pairs. Their elevated simplicity also shines in other settings, such as dressing rooms, bedrooms and hallways.
Designed with living rooms, dining rooms and hallways in mind, the Veo wall light is a refined, sculptural form that appears to float elegantly on the wall and washes a delicate, angled light pattern upwards. Crafted from white blown glass, it has a gentle semi-circular silhouette and wide, vertical fluted bands, inspired by neoclassical columns. The subtle metal fixture at the base is available in matt nickel or bronze to complement any colour scheme. Carefully considered, the light looks just as elegant when glimpsed from below as it does from any other viewpoint. The Veo flatters any setting but is especially useful in intimate spaces where its craftsmanship can be appreciated up close. As with the other lights in the collection, its shade and light source are replaceable to maximise its lifespan.
Design Director and Cofounder James Bassant describes the collection as “intrinsically Astro.” Adding: “We have proudly provided Astro lighting in John Lewis customers’ homes for nearly 25 years, and I am excited to showcase a collection which reflects our longstanding partnership. With a core focus on trusted, quality British lighting design, this bathroom collection showcases a timeless aesthetic; a series of products that will transcend seasons and be appreciated for many years to come”.
